While the hotel’s corridor and hallway felt dated, we were caught by surprise when we entered the room. Smelled newly refurbished and so modern, super spacious as well. Everything felt so clean, toilet and all. It was honestly one of our best stays for the two weeks road trip. Room was so new that the fridge wasn’t plugged in, but not an issue to us. Breakfast was great too.

This place was absolutely beautiful! Everything about it was great, the rooms were beautiful and comfortable, the meals were great. Everything was so stylish and beautifully decorated. I was so impressed to see my favourite William Morris wallpaper in the restaurant! I loved sitting by the fireplace in the lobby reading my book. The grounds are stunning. Staff were very friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed Galway.

We thoroughly enjoyed Galway. We wished we had booked to stay longer. The city was a hive of activity, especially at night in the Spanish Quarter - so many pubs and restaurants, music playing and as it was warm when we were there, loads of people were enjoying alfresco drinking and dining. During the day we drove to the majestic Cliffs of Mohr and around the Connemara.

We came for good trad music, and we got it! Traffic and parking can be a challenge, but it was worth the effort. Great Tesco in a shopping area south of the town centre with lots of free parking. We ate twice at M. J. Hobans. It was pretty good for pub food.

Sligo is busy, but still friendly and feels safe to us. There are good places to eat and shop, and we found a modern self-service laundry that was easy to use. Coming from the US and renting a car to tour the west end of Ireland? Consider traveling to Sligo by bus or train first instead of renting a car at the airport. We were able to relax on our first day in Ireland and had a comfortable rental experience the next morning.

Oranmore was much more interesting than I expected.

Oranmore was much more interesting than I expected. It has a very historic background, and there are many explanatory notices about the town. I was a little disappointed that Oranmore Castle was in private ownership and not available to amble around. It was one of the towns raided by the Black and Tans in the 1920s, and there is a memorial to Joe Howley, a local shot dead in the war of independence. I found the info on the origin of the name Oranmore fascinating. It derives from a spring, which is still to be seen. Fuaran (spring) changed to Uaran. -))

Plenty of shops, bars and restaurants.

Plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. The National Museum of Ireland is just a few minutes drive away. Castlebar is ideally located for exploring County Mayo. The local library is excellent too with very friendly helpful staff who were only too willing to help with a little family history enquiry. We only stayed for one night and had our main meal in Lana, an Asian restaurant. The food was lovely and plentiful. So much so, we didn't bother with breakfast the following day.
