A Magic Southern Jewel

Comprising the south part of Italy’s Region of Puglia, the Salento peninsula is located in the ‘heel’ of the Italian ‘boot’. With an unusual and beautiful landscape, it also has traditions shaped by explorers and invaders from a variety of cultures that reached its coasts.

If Salento is a jewel, the main piece is definitely the city of Lecce. Its walled historic centre is greatly admired for the uniqueness of its Baroque style. It also has a Roman theatre and a Greek amphitheatre, both still in use. Try a hotel in Lecce’s old town and go back in time!

It was so lovely everything being single storey. Such a sense of space and escape. The food was so great. Some of the buffet can be a bit underwhelming, but when you figure out which of the counters to go to for the best food, you're on to a winner. The speciality stall at lunch was incredible. The apertivo times were so good. Such amazing variety. And to cook pasta on mass and still be brilliantly at dente is super impressive. The flavours were amazing, the olive oil available for the tables was so delicious. The staff were all so lovely and accommodating. The kids club and the entertainment activities were so much fun. The beach is small but paradise. The main pool is amazing. Always more than enough sunbeds and umbrellas, and an excellent temperature.

Amazing location. A pleasant option to use the hotel transfer to the beach. The hotel has a dedicated section on the beach with umbrellas for hotel guests. The pool at the hotel is very large and clean. The food is absolutely amazing. For breakfast there is a great selection of delicious and fresh food, great cakes and pastries. Even the staff will fix you a fresh coffee at the bar in the morning. I recommend ordering with half board, dinner was served 4 course menu. Excellent choice of Apulia cuisine. Every night we tasted a bit of southern Italy. We had an amazing time staying here

Breakfast is divine. A healthy selection of fruit, yogurt, juices and the most inviting selection of pastries. I loved the grounds and patios - so beautifully decorated with large pottery urns overflowing with blossoms. I loved listening to the bees buzzing and the birds singing when I first wake up of a morning and seeing all the colourful blossoms - particularly the brilliant bougainvilleas.

Charming city with many options to visit interesting...

Charming city with many options to visit interesting locations in the city itself, and of course the city museum is a must! So much choice for wonderful local food too - especially noting the pasticciotto. Lecce is also within easy train rides of a host of other picturesque towns and villages in the region.

We really liked Ostuni as a home base for Puglia region. We stayed 8 days, which is a little too long for October, because to cover everything there and not to enjoy beaches 5-6 days would be enough . We loved walking through old town, plenty of of restaurants. Driving around was easy, not too long to cover all the towns on our list

We spent 2 weeks in Puglia and Otranto is by far the most beautiful relaxing town in the south of Italy. The historic center is stunning, loads of amazing restaurants, shops, beaches, swimming areas, it has everything and no sense of tourism competing with local life, as we noticed in other towns. The prices are reasonable, it is easy to drive in and out and to find parking. It is just stunning.

Brindisi isn't as full on touristy as other Puglia hot spots - we did 2 nights and it was just right. It was much quieter than other places we subsequently visited. We did a boat tour around the harbour and a self guided walking tour of the old town including museums on our only full day there. Saw St George's (of the dragon) mummified hand in a church where its preserved as a religious relic. Went up the sailors monument and on first night had fresh fish second night best steak (probably) I've ever had at Don Angus.

We stayed in Baia Verde in September and all the restaurants and bars were closed so we had to travel a short ride to Gallipoli for suppers. It was well worth it. The centro storico is stunning for suppers by the sea and aperitivi at sunset. We parked outside the old city and its walls and interior are very walkable....there are also tuktuks if one wished to use them. The beach at Baia Verde is one of the most beautiful I have been to so far...would have liked to stay one week or more at this stunning beach. From here we traveled to Santa Maria di Leuca (where the Ionian sea meets the Adriatic sea)to do a 3nhour boat tour and visit the heel of Italy (the country's most southern point).

Cisternino is one of those places that feels like a hidden...

Cisternino is one of those places that feels like a hidden gem of Puglia. It’s less well known and therefore much less touristy than some of the nearby towns, which gives it a wonderfully authentic and relaxed atmosphere. The historic streets are beautiful, there are so many gorgeous restaurants and little places to eat, and the views from the Ponte at sunset are simply stunning. It has a really special charm that makes you want to slow down, wander around and enjoy the evening.

Castle and ruins were nice to see however much of the city is run down with a lot of graffiti and deserted buildings. Had to take 45 minute bus ride to go to a private beach which we had to pay for but was very nice.

The lighthouse is great and worth visiting.

The lighthouse is great and worth visiting. There are numerous decent restaurants in town. The front is nice to walk along. You can take a boat trip to the caves. And best of all it is about 10 mins drive to some really fantastic beaches with beautiful turquoise sea.

We really enjoyed Torre Santa Sabina, a small and peaceful seaside resort with a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. During our stay in September, the resort was very quiet and seemed to attract a slightly older crowd, although this was probably due to visiting in the off-season.
