If you ever have reason to visit Saijo, try to stay at this hotel. It is fabulous. Just three years old, this architectural marvel will delight you at every turn. We just had one night on our way back to Matsuyama and we sincerely wish we could have had more. The spaces are huge and lavish. Everything is comfortable and accommodating including kitchen facilities. Parking and check-in is simple and there are beautiful outdoor areas too. It is close to various amenities. I thoroughly recommend it.

It is a beautiful ryokan with a rich historic atmosphere and elegant decor. My 6 futons room was very spacious, quiet, and had a wonderful view. The shared bathroom was clean and well equipped with high-quality fixtures, which made the stay even more comfortable. The staff were friendly and attentive. I also reserved a diced steak dinner, which was very delicious. It was served at Mori Cafe, where western food is also available. Overall, it was a very enjoyable and relaxing stay.

Ryokan located near the Vine Bridge with a bus stop next to it. The landlady was really nice and friendly! I can speak a couple words in Japanese and tried to communicate in this language with her or the staff whenever I could ; she would speak English when it was hard to communicate. Breakfast and dinner were delicious and generous. I felt bad for not being able to eat everything. The room was spacious and they provided a yukata to wear in the ryokan.

Absolutely loved our stay. It was a piece of paradise after riding the day from Onomishi. The staff were very welcoming and lovely, and thought of every key moment. Views were lovely and the room was perfect. Eco vibes and loved the Aussie native plants too. To top it off Brekky was yum and croissant 🙌🏼

Very accommodating to two bikepackers. Ideal halfway point stop if travelling between Tokushima and Kochi by bicycle. Located in a extremely beautiful location. Spa facilities very good, traditional and clean. Staff were accommodating to us even though myself and my friend had tattoos, though they did warn that if a customer complained we would be required to leave the spa facilities (this didn't happen and I would expect this to be uncommon, but may be a concern nonetheless). The food was kaiseki style Japanese, which we were able to request be provided as vegan, and was delicious!

Sakaide Grand Hotel is a large hotel near the harbour area of Sakaide. The hotel - as well as most of Sakaide itself - has a bit of Showa-romance felling. The rooms are largend the breakfast is great! There is a public bath on the third floor, but upon arriving you may be given a ticket for the nearby large public bath, where most of the towns people seem to go in the evening.

For an older hotel, I really had a very pleasant stay. Rooms have everything you need, bed was comfortable. Staff gracefully allowed me to stow my luggage, and the breakfast buffet was impressive. Very close to the tram line that will take you to the train stations or Dogo Onsen. Many restaurants nearby as well.

A great medium size city in Shikoku that offers all that you need to spend a couple of days relaxing. Good food/ shopping/sites and an attractive waterfront. We enjoyed touring the castle and world-famous garden as well as trolling in the shopping area. Takamatsu is not as tourist driven so it was more like being in a Japanese city vs a tourist destination.

I only spent one day in Matsuyama, but I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I also took some time to explore the surrounding areas, including the shoreline at Iyo-Kaminada, Shimonada Station, Iyo-Ozu, and Yawatahama. In Matsuyama itself, Dogo Onsen was an amazing and historically fascinating place. The attractions in the surrounding region also made Matsuyama an even more appealing destination. Enjoyed a relaxing hot spring experience at the Dogo Onsen Annex Asuka-no-Yu. It is great to get around the city via the city tram as it connects all the major tourism spots. If time allows, I would love to stay longer next time and explore more of the city and its surroundings. I will definitely visit again.

If you are looking to get away from the big cities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka), consider this less-travelled island. We went during Awa Odori Matsuri and we were blown away by the festival, and how the local community can put on a show. Outside of Matsuri season, its a quieter, slower pace of life, with many temples, pilgrimage sites to visit, close to nature.

It's very easy to get to Kochi city after arriving at the Kochi Ryoma airport. The airport bus takes about 30 minutes to the JR Kochi Station. Recommend first visiting the Tourist Office just outside the South exit. The best tourist office you'll ever want with literally tons of information in Japanese and English. The staff was very helpful and they can help with transportation details/bus schedules/discount passes, etc. Get the day-pass for use on the streetcars, it's a bargain at 500 yen as each ride normally costs 230 yen. If you are visiting the Ryoma Sakamoto museum/statue in Katsurahama and also the Makino Botanical Garden buy the Mi-yu bus pass for 1,300 yen (normally 1,900 yen) . These can be purchased at the Tourist Office.

A small town set in a valley surrounded by steep forested mountains and a majestic river Gateway to Iya Valley and other stunning sights. No shortage of top class food options and bars (particularly Casual Bar for great fun and karaoke and Cafe Addcolor). And the locals are some of the very nicest and generous people I have met. Can easily spend days just walking around the town and hidden laneways to shrines and spectacular scenery. I will definitely come back.

The clock in front of the Dogo Onsen is magic. Also, the Botchan train is well worth the visit, although we weren't able to have our visit co-incide with the running days, but had the experience in the past. Unfortunately, our stay was too short to experience the shopping street and castle, which we've heard is something every visitor should see.
