I booked this hotel without much expectation, mainly for the convenience of traveling to Ginzan Onsen. But once I checked in, I felt a bit regretful that I didn’t have more time to stay. The hotel is beautiful and clean, the staff are lovely, and they even upgraded my room. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious. The public onsen was beautiful, clean, and very inviting, and there was even a private onsen in the room. The hotel is beautifully decorated with plenty of photo spots throughout.

Yutagawa Onsen, Tsuruoka
Set in Tsuruoka, 12 km from Kamo Aquarium, Tsukasaya Ryokan features accommodation with a hot spring bath. This 4-star ryokan offers full-day security and luggage storage space. The ryokan offers rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. Of all the hotels and ryokans I stayed at during my two weeks traveling Japan, the night at Tsukasaya Ryokan was by far my favorite. Mrs. Shoji personally came out and greeted me at my taxi. From that moment onward, I felt as if I was receiving an experience personalized just for me. After showing me to my room, Mrs. Shoji informed me of several local attractions (parks, shrines, temples, etc.) that were lovely to visit prior to returning for dinner. Every moment of the stay felt thoughtfully crafted and authentic. The food was delicious, containing many dishes that I had never before experienced. The onsen, while small and enclosed, was at just the right temperature and left my skin feeling the best it has in years. The design of the structure was charming and authentic (as best that a foreigner like myself can judge). The staff were friendly and accommodating.
Mount Haguro, Tsuruoka
Set in Tsuruoka, 24 km from Kamo Aquarium, Shukubo Daishinbo has a garden, parking on-site and rooms with free WiFi access. It is located 46 km from Shinjo Station and offers luggage storage space. The guest house features family rooms. Daishinbo was truly a special experience, as vegetarians Japan has been difficult at times, but the beautifully presented meals at this wonderful pilgrim lodge were simply amazing. Our room was huge and it felt like a home away from home — would love to return one day!

The hotel was lovely and staff were excellent. Great location and an easy walk to the ski field and village for dinner. I stayed in a traditional Japanese room and the view of the village was beautiful. The staff were always helpful and very friendly. Highly recommend.

Great location close to Yamagata Station and other restaurants and bars. The breakfast was good and the hotel was next to a Family Mart. Great value for money!
Onsen on site is lovely and quiet. The place is a family business and they are very lovely and what a team! They're so polite, active, helpful and always smiling. Highly recommended!
You definitely get a lot for your moneys worth, it exceeded my expectation especially seeing how affordable it was. Fresh and clean rooms with comfortable beds, as well as nice and helpful staff.
The accommodation is great and the host family is super nice! Great place to stay when skiing. They helped us out a lot and gave us lots of good advice that allowed us to enjoy Zao Onsen to the max.
A family-run place, Tamokan is basic but excellently located for those interested in visiting Mt.Haguro. The food was excellent, and we were amazed by their hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed the food, and the owner was super helpful, too. The couple spoke English, there was no language barrier, and everything was smooth.
Spacious room, good heating, very welcoming family, central to the rest of the village, close to the ski station and free Onsen!
The location was fantastic for skiing and the hosts were wonderful and accommodating. My kids really enjoyed the the hotel.
We stayed a tripple room. It was huge. The furniture is not fixed to the walls or floor so you can move it around as you need it. We moved all the beds together and slept as a family of four (one elementary school kid, we announced the number of guests beforehand and payed for the additional breakfast at check in) very comfortable in the three beds. An additional blanket was in the cupboard and each bedding consisted of two pillows anyhow, so no problem.
The room was modern and had all the appliances we needed - but it was too small for a family of three. Would have booked a bigger room if I was aware of this children-stay-free nonsense (not even an extra pillow is provided).
