A beautiful city with plenty of history, impressive architecture, reliable public transport, and great restaurant and street food options. There are also plenty of castles to explore in the surrounding area, and the underground Pétrusse Casemates are a must-do. Easily explored in about a week.

Echternach, if not the entire t of Luxembourg, is an underrated gem. Being English we barely heard a single country person and you are really missing out! If you love the outdoors I couldn't think of a better place to come. Public transport is entirely free and very easy to navigate with the brilliant app mobiliteit.lu. We went on trains, buses and trams entirely free the whole time. It is very easy to set off from Echternach on a bus then walk all the way back, or just do a loop then return back to base. The Mullerthal trail app again is really helpful to find out what walks are in each area - app.mullerthal.lu. But you could just walk directly from Echternach and our youth hostel.
The Hostel was set on the lake. There was a climbing wall, bike hire, walks and swimming lakeside. A huge adventure playground with toilets, a Roman villa, a great restaurant - all within minutes. Two supermarkets, one close to the lake and the other in the town gave plentiful options for food. The town is very attractive and has a long pedestrian street with outstanding restaurants (if you love Sushi go to Wangs, it was out of this world).
It's a simple hour trip from Luxembourg city so could be done in a day but that wouldn't do it justice. You could also get to Trier in Germany (amazing city!) in about 45 minutes if a city trip was your thing. You should go!

Berdorf is my favorite go-to location if I wanna go on a hiking weekend. It's about a three hour drive from where I live, so very doable for a weekendtrip. The entire Echternach region in beautiful (check out the Mullerthal Trail), but the region around Berdorf is especially beautiful. The forests around Berdorf all have those typical rock formations with stairs and ladders, little chasms etc that really make it so much more interesting than a normal forest hike. The town itself is very small and is really just meant to spend the night in between two days of heavy hiking.

I was here for business and the Ibis I stayed in was doing what it needed, I slept decently. I saw very little of the town, so I cannot recommend this. I went to the Agile Tour Luxembourg which I definitely CAN recommend :)

I wasnt there long, an overnight stop with a morning walk into the town. The petrol prices were pretty reasonable and there was a decent supermaket and mini mall at the bottom of the town.
If staying for a short break I would probably get a hotel in Luxembourg City, as although all transport in the country is free its stops at 2300. Also to be fair I was there on a Monday night so maybe its a bit livelier at weekends?

Diekirch is a wonderful place to visit.
Diekirch is a wonderful place to visit. For those interested in World War Two, the town was in the path of battle in 1940 and again in 1944/45. The National Military Museum is superb. The town is well worth a two-day visit, very picturesque, the Sauer (Sure) River flows through, walk along the river, it's very nice.
One caution: most restaurants are closed on Sunday and Monday, so you may have to search for a place to eat. On the square in the pedestrian zone, there are a few open.

The buiding reminds you of the beautiful medieval architecture, though the rooms are furnished with modern amenities, Internet is slow in the rooms, but they compensate it with a Business Centre which you can use free of cost, where you get good Wifi. So if you are comig for work, be mindful of this.
Public transport is available and you have the bus stop right in front of the property, But if you arrive by car, even better.

Lovely town with many bars and restaurants.
Lovely town with many bars and restaurants. Whilst we were there, there was a market over the weekend which was very busy, selling local produce & a few clothing stalls. They also had a stage set up and local bands played there each night. One area has been made over into a small beach with sand & deck chairs, great for children to play, whilst you enjoy a drink!

A fabulous country & city. Public transport is amazing, punctual, free, safe & clean. It makes accessing the city & country easy & fantastic value.
Lots of places to visit, cafes & restaurants are lovely & something for all budgets. The beer is delicious, food tasty. We had a fab mini break & will be back.

The paths are perfectly sign-posted and there are so many to choose from. Easy to get around, and having free public transport makes it even easier to get around.
