Beautiful old city within the walls.

Beautiful old city within the walls. Museums were great, lots of very good restaurants and cafes. Well worth at least 3 days. Easy to walk the whole old city. Forte de San Miguel has the relics from the Mayan temples and is very interesting .

Walking distance from the hotel; a cool, but small ruin.

Walking distance from the hotel; a cool, but small ruin. Becán is also close (5 -10min by car) and a much larger and more interesting ruin - toucans, mot-mots, bat-falcons - plan for 2+ hrs. Chicanná is also near (10-15min by car), plan for 1+ hr - easy to do all three in a day. 2 or 3 restaurants within walking distance from Xpujil ruins (across the street); town of Xpujil is nice with other simple options and another charming, budget hotel (El Hormiguero hotel) that other travelers liked - tucked three or so blocks into the town itself).

Isla Aguada is now a magical pueblo and it has a ways to go to live up to that name. It is a scrubby town that is trying to improve. We were there off season and on a Monday when most things were closed, so it is probably much more lively in the summer. Lots of seafood restaurants and the main draw is that a boat will take you out to see the dolphins. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was great fun and we saw a lot of dolphins. Our guide told us the time from March to August is better, the water is calmer and clearer and there are more dolphins, plus sea turtles.

The Maya train is now functional.

The Maya train is now functional. Apparently most travelers go to Calakmul, the larger Maya archaological site in the area. But there are other hidden treasures! We visited Becan, Hormiguero and Xpujil archaeological sites, and we were generally the only ones there . We were a group of bird watchers, and there are fantastic birds to see going to and at each archaeological site. Our guide, when separated from the group, came face to face with a jaguar on the road. Wow! The most amazing natural attraction in the area is the bat cave that has the largest cocnentration of bats in all of the Americas-- some 3 million! You can view this phenomenon by arriving around 4:30 or 5 pm for a short guided walk to the cave opening. Xpujil has several great (and inexpensive) restaurants.

I needed to do more research to be ready to explore things - for my interests. However, it is easy to walk and see the sights on your own. Lots of good places to shop and eat. La Maria for great food and margaritas and a few nice shops at the opposite end of Calle59 - especially Taller Mayaby the gate.

It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology.

It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology. But you need to be up for a "half horse" town. To get to a basic restaurant we walked through the middle of roadworks. Most roads giving access to the hotel were closed for road works and of course there are no diversions..you just work it out! But the archaeology is fabulous though to get to Calakmul was a 3 hour drive each way .
