Excellent hotel, winery, spa and restaurant, with a real WOW factor. We stayed in an outstanding Vineyard Suite with a private pool. It was very stylish, spacious and comfortable. Let me start this review with a little spoiler: we had originally booked just one night, as a stopover on our road trip along the Garden Route. Well, barely 20 minutes after our arrival — after the tour of our room and the entire hotel, all the way to the terrace with that breathtaking view — we booked an extra night. It was love at first sight with Birkenhead House! What a hotel! How often do you still see that these days, by the way: people taking the time to show you not just your room, but the whole hotel? You can really feel how proud everyone here is — and rightly so! Having all meals and drinks included in the rate is also an incredible asset. And rest assured, no crowded buffets here, but friendly and discreet table service for your meals, as well as in the lounges or out on the terrace for a drink. Top-notch! Oh, and excellent beds too, featuring the best sleep aid in the world: the sound of the ocean! It’s actually that unique blend of the true boutique hotel atmosphere (a term that’s often overused but absolutely fitting here), the in-cre-di-ble location perched on the cliffs with (literally!) views of breaching whales behind the surfers, the intimacy, the delicious food & drinks, the stunning views from almost every spot, and — above all! — the wonderful staff, that make this hotel so exceptional. A huge thank you to the entire team for making our stay at Birkenhead House an absolute highlight of our trip! (...and thank God our room was available for that extra night!) :-)

The location is second to none, incredible ocean and mountain vistas almost wherever you look, but what really made this experience something special are the staff, they are attentive, engaging and friendly. What really struck me about the staff is how much they actually care about your experience, always asking “can I help you with x” or “we can do y if that’s better for you” etc without skipping a beat!

In my reservation, I have mentionned that we are on our Honeymoon travel, so the Hotel upgrade my room, and we also have a complimentary bottle of wine. After dinner, when we went back in the room, there was petals flower on the bed writing I Love U. It was awesome, so we loved that place and we will remember for a long time. I highly recommend this hotel everything was perfect !

There’s something truly special about Hermanus.

There’s something truly special about Hermanus. From the breathtaking ocean views to the relaxed coastal atmosphere, it’s the perfect escape in the Western Cape. Our visit was unforgettable from start to finish. We enjoyed a fantastic lunch at Ficks, perched right on the rocks with incredible sea views and a laid-back vibe that captures everything great about Hermanus. The food was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented, making it one of the highlights of our trip. Mother’s Day lunch at Benguela Cove was equally exceptional. The setting is absolutely stunning, surrounded by vineyards and lagoon views, and the atmosphere felt elegant yet welcoming. The service was warm and attentive, and the meal itself was outstanding. A perfect way to celebrate such a special occasion. Hermanus offers the ideal mix of natural beauty, world-class food, and peaceful charm. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend getaway, wine tasting, whale watching, or simply to relax by the ocean, it’s a destination that leaves a lasting impression. We can’t wait to return.

If you like hiking then it would be a good base for a couple of days. Unfortunately much of the area was closed after a storm but we still managed to find some beautiful spots to get to. An extra day or two in the area would have been good.

Gansbaai is central to alot of activity in the area. Nice beaches, small villages. You can easily do a day trip to Hermanus and Gordons bay. Worth while and also cost effective. There is enought shops to visit majoyr retailers also.

The paths and boardwalk along the coast are delightful with benches along the way. The air is unpolluted and both days and nights are silent. It is the perfect getaway from the city to recharge one's batteries. The deli and restaurant at the circle in Harbour road is a great place to eat or get a variety of frozen, homemade, takeaway meals for self-catering.

Friendly people, safe and clean town. Variety of good restaurants available. Various places to visit. Great beach area with safe swimming area. Close to Agulhas and Arniston areas with places to visit. Continuous strong winds can limit your outdoor activities.

Greyton is attractive especially if you take time to walk...

Greyton is attractive especially if you take time to walk down side roads and explore its natural beauty. For the most part it is tranquil, but it can get quite busy at times in the upper half of the main hub. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from of varying standards. Given that it is just a little upmarket village, it is not unusual that there are hardly any shops for necessities or niceties. In light of that, the OK Minimart is pretty decent though. Be warned, there are no clothes shops (except for second hand clothing). So if you have forgotten something, you can look forward to a long, long trip to Calendon! On the whole, a tranquil picturesque village that is well worth a visit.

Some good walks around.

Some good walks around. The main attraction is the most southern point in Africa which is a focal.point for holiday photos for people from all.over the world. San Parks have upgraded the facilities at Aghulus and the site opens in April 2026.

For visiting the hot springs it is good, however it is expensive and you are better off staying in an Air BnB near by and visiting the springs in the day time. Bedrooms lack privacy and are prone to noise from the outside and neighbouring rooms well into the evening.

We loved the walks along the coast both on the beach and...

We loved the walks along the coast both on the beach and along the cliff top and down onto the rocks. The Waenhuiskraal Cave was well worth visiting. The fishing traps on the way to the Baken were very interesting. Enjoyed wandering around the fishing village of Kassiesbaai and watching the small fishing boats landing and all the activity as the fishing catch was brought in. Arniston is well positioned for trips to nearby Struisbaai, L"Agulhas and the Shipwreck Museum in Bredasdorp.
