We never met Driss , the super friendly, helpful owner other reviewers had said made their stay so special. We understand he no longer lives at the property which is a shame for guests. We were the only guests, which we think might be quite usual and the guesthouse is only minimally staffed – after breakfast we often saw no one until a quick visit late in the evening . Staff, speaking little or no English consisted of a man plus the happy, smiling Lubna we usually saw at breakfast time . Mostly we felt we were just alone in the whole guest house. As a single traveller, which was my original intention, I would have felt very lonely. We asked for help choosing a restaurant which never happened as no one was ever there at an appropriate time to show us as promised, and there were other things for which we would have liked help and advice . I do need to say that this visit was during Ramadan and perhaps staffing would be different at other times . Our shower area was quite rustic, a circle of old tiles, which quickly filled and flooded the floor on each use, though it dried fairly quickly. On the one hot night during our stay, we could not make the air-conditioning work. Further, and it could have been quite a problem, trying to confirm by text with the owner about payment due to communication difficulties with the hotel man, we discovered the night before we left that their card machine was not working and got the impression this was not something that had just happened. Payment was expected in Euros . We explained to Driss this was awkward for us and the best we could do between us was cover the cash in a mix of euros and sterling. On coming to pay the hotel man on leaving, we were surprised to find he had heard nothing from Driss about our conversation and he was quite bemused at the sight of UK pounds . If forewarned we could have brought euro cash with us. We stayed here for five days.

There are many good things about this guest house. It has been beautifully and lovingly restored. The roof terrace catches a slight breeze and is a lovely place to sit. The water pressure is good, the water is hot and the bed was comfortable . The location in the heart of the old this part of the Medina (walled city ) was a mixed blessing. it was hugely atmospheric, but personally I struggled to ever find my way back home
