FAQs about hotels in Carcassonne

Out of a Fairytale

Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.

Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays between the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even spawned a board game.

Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city centre over the Aude River.

Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including the fine art museum and the cathedral with its impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and pavement cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.

Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is a mere 3 miles out of the city centre.

We loved Carcassonne and highly recommend it as a romantic or family destination. Beautiful, fairytale views of the city walls from almost everywhere. I must have taken hundreds of glorious photos! Fascinating history about the Cathars, their intriguing religion and the medieval way of life. Brilliant for children as well as adults. Rue Trivalle, just outside the city walls is very good for restaurants and bars. We stayed nearby and it was the perfect location. Friendly locals.

We were attracted to Carcassone by pictures of the castle.

We were attracted to Carcassone by pictures of the castle. It is in fact a reconstructed structure, mainly given over to shops and restaurants. The new town is rather run down, with many empty shops and even Les Halles was virtually closed. People were friendly. Luckily we decided to have 2 days in Toulouse in the middle of our stay.

Carcassonne is well worth a visit!

Carcassonne is well worth a visit! The citadel is within easy reach of the town and is stunning. Once we had visited it several times, as well as the Musee des Beaux Arts and down town, there was time to venture to Narbonne by train. What a very interesting town! We did a guided tour of the Gothic cathedral and surrounding area (in French only), starting at the Town Hall and also visited the market. Food in Carcassonne was hit and miss - a bit too much on the 'fast food' spectrum. Narbonne, however, did not disappoint on that score.

Carcassonne Castle is definitely worth the visit even with the crowds. It is a well-preserved walled Castle with many lanes to wonder through, shops to explore and restaurants to try. You only need an afternoon or morning to visit it, but if you wanted hang out longer and people watch or fantasize life back in Medieval times - it lends itself to that as well.

Carcassonne medieval old town is a UNESCO world heritage...

Carcassonne medieval old town is a UNESCO world heritage site so for that reason alone it is worth a visit. What makes it particularly charming is that it is an ancient city that has been well renovated but yet is still very alive with inhabitants and traders not just tourists. The castle is impressive and there is an excellent audio guide in several languages including English. The film presentation at the start of the castle tour is must, it gives you a clear picture of the whole of the medieval city and it is so good we watched it twice! The castle visit finishes with walk along the north ramparts which allows you to appreciate what a truly amazing citadel Carcassonne is. There are many shops selling mainly artisan goods but we found some of the prices rather high for the goods offered. There are lots of restaurants to choose from and many seem to serve cassoulet, the regional dish. There are also a few budget fast food restaurants. on the main route in from the Porte Narbonnaise. There is a main square, Place Marcou, I think which has lots of restaurants and a lively atmosphere.

Carcassonne is a beautiful and interesting place to visit.

Carcassonne is a beautiful and interesting place to visit. The 'Old Cite' is a super place to explore and the main city has everything you hope for in a city including architecture galleries and many good shops and restaurants. The proximity to the airport is a bonus. 3 full days is a suitable length of visit to do the place justice.

Fabulous location for exploring the medieval city, Carcassonne old town and new. Easy access to the trains for further afield exploring eg Toulouse & Narbonne which are both lovely. The gite was very well equipped and to a high specification and immaculately clean. Our hosts were both charming and attentive to our needs but we actually didn't need to contact them as we had all we needed on hand. The stop for the shuttle bus to the airport is a ten minute walk away which makes life very easy.
