The Undiscovered Asian Capital
Capital of the Republic of China (commonly known as Taiwan), huge Taipei is surrounded by mountains. Taipei 101, once the world’s tallest building, dominates its skyline from Xinyi, an area known for the most active nightlife.
At Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall the national flag is raised every morning and the guard changed every hour. Less known for tourists is National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, containing a tall bronze statue of the country’s founding father.
Of the wealth of Taipei museums, the best are Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines and the National Palace Museum – one of world’s largest collections of Chinese artifacts. Even more numerous are the temples dedicated to Buddhist, Taoist and Chinese folk religions. Xinsheng South Road is nicknamed ‘Road to Heaven’ for its sheer number, but most famous is Longshan Temple in Wanhua, the oldest district.
Taipei shopping is fantastic and includes Core Pacific Living Mall, supposedly Asia’s largest. The Ximending area has lots of shops (and karaoke), while the Shilin Night Market should not be missed. For a break from the bustle head to central Daan Forest Park, the botanical gardens with its lotus ponds,or Yangmingshan National Park, known for hot spring baths and spring cherry blossom.

I have no idea why this city is the 20th most visited city in the world. I was planning on spending time traveling the entire country, but tossed that plan and flew to Korea after only a few days. July is very hot and humid so planning each day requires some thought. There are good museums (with air con) as well as interesting old parts of the city. A great shop for buying oolong tea. The botanical gardens are an oasis of calm. Unlimited opportunities to find interesting food (as well as "western food" like sandwiches and burghers). I took a one-day train rides round the Taiwan, it took me about 14 hours. Getting on from Songshan station, taking off at Kaohsiung, heading to Taidong and Hualien, and back to Songshan. Personally faces a lot of bad experiences in Taipei especially in Taipei Hospital when I went for a emergency treatment. As a tourist in a wheelchair none of the employees in hospital assist me for the treatment to until to taxi I booked after my treatment. Lovely city!
