I can completely say that I speak from experience and...
I can completely say that I speak from experience and knowledge about this city. I'd lived in Manta, Manabi, Ecuador from December 1, 2003, until late June 2013. I felt that Manta was the lost jewel that I'd always been looking for. The city was bustling with commerce during the day and at night it came alive with fiestas and parties. The club scene was outstanding and little to no violence. Of course, they had the criminal element, but they knew to stay on their turf and not venture outward. The beaches were always alive and restaurants outstanding. I love the city and I go back often to visit my Godson and his family. Now, let's fast forward to 20 years later and the here and now. Since the uprising in Venezuela that led to the migration of their criminals to Ecuador and the corruption of the government of Ecuador since the presidency of President Correa ended, it has been a free for all of crime and violence. They have allowed illegals to enter and ravish the City of Manta, bringing their prostitution, drugs, and violent crime to a once peaceful and bustling city. No one, not even the police are doing something about it. Hence, la policia acostada, the term means the police laying down. I would visit Cuenca if I wanted to vacation in Ecuador or Guayaquil, but Guayaquil is much more down the drain than Manta. It is shameful what corruption and evil can do to a place. Now, you have it, the truth unfolded. My last time in Manta was May 19 thru June 1, 2023. The good people of Manta are still the best people on the planet. I feel so sorry for the situation that they are in.Guest review byFirestorm1966United States - 8.0

PL is a very pleasant fishing village in EC on the Pacific ocean. The beach is fabulous and there are many good places to eat. We recommend eating at Ancora. The owners and staff are great. The chef is from Barcelona and makes some original Spanish dishes. One bit of advice for all these beach villages is eat early to avoid the loud music that fires up as the evening progresses. For some reason they think this extremely loud music is what everyone wants to hear.Guest review bySevomanUnited States - 10.0
A beautiful, quiet town on a beautiful beach.
A beautiful, quiet town on a beautiful beach. Plenty of seafood restaurants. The town basically has one road, so its easy to find your way around. The beach is long enough for an easy hour long walk in either direction from the town.Guest review byPaul CheeversCanada - 10.0
Ayampe is a quiet and extremely safe location.
Ayampe is a quiet and extremely safe location. It is next to the Colibri trail which is one of the best birdwatching locations in Ecuador. This small place has a range of excellent restaurants which are very reasonably priced. It has good surfing available and the beach is fantastic and very quiet.Guest review byTonyUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Portoviejo has one of the best private hospitals in the country. We were there for a medical procedure. There are excellent facilities in the area---nice international wine store, for example. We didn't see much else, as this was not a tourist trip.Guest review byGretchenEcuador - 4.0

Manta is a regional hub - hard to avoid but not really a tourist destination. We traveled by bus and the bus station is far from the city center. As experienced travelers, we made an intermediate hotel work for us but most tourists would probably prefer accommodations on the far side of the city above Murcielogo Beach. Downtown the restaurant Casa Rosada was great. If you want the beach and fishing village ambiance, pass by Manta and pick a coastal town further south.Guest review byCharlesUnited States - 8.0

There were lots of things to do outside the beach: whale watching, scuba, seeing the monkeys in the Sendero Bola del Oro, bird watching in Ayampe Reserve. In the community el Pital we used Carlos Manrique and it was a great guide - 0982767109 or on Facebook at sendero bola de oro. We went with the Rosita whale watching and they really tried to make sure you got your money's worth of whales, seals, and boobies! It is fun to get up in the morning and watch the fishing boats come back in with the birds fighting the fishermen for their haul! There were so good restaurants depending on your taste - the Hotel Victor Hugo had lots of variety and good desserts; the Il Capuccino pizzería Ristorante had good options and a friendly staff.Guest review byCathleenUnited States - 8.0
I have previously lived in Manta for a few years.
I have previously lived in Manta for a few years. Overall Ecuador is not known for cleanliness. It is a backward third world country. Ecuadorians are so selfish and careless. Music has to be loud; throwing thrash seems to be a birth right; cars use horns constantly; sidewalks are dangerous; and the attitude is selfish. The hostal that I stayed in is an older building and climbing to the fourth floor has been a challenge. An elevator would have been a relief. But the stairs are narrow and dangerous.Guest review byMesfinUnited States - 8.0

Like most travellers in summer we went to Puerto Lopez for Isla de Plata and the whale watching. It's definitely worth a visit as Isla de Plata, the turtles and humpback whales were magnificent. Unfortunately in summer you only have a few real sunny days. We had one (when we visited Isla de Plata) but the other days were overcasted with sometimes a fine drizzle. Therefore we did not went to visit/see Parque National Machalilla which should be worth a visit as well.Guest review byWilhelmusNetherlands
