The quintessential Swiss village, Zermatt is nestled in the Matter Valley and surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Alps, including the iconic Matterhorn. The perfect pyramid shape of this mountain – immortalised in the Toblerone chocolate bar – is one of the most recognisable symbols of Switzerland and the first thing you’ll see as you approach Zermatt.
To preserve the breathtaking view of the Matterhorn, Zermatt is a car-free town with only electric taxis, shuttles and buses allowed. If you’re arriving by car, you’ll need to park it in the nearby village of Täsch and take a ten-minute train to Zermatt from there. While in town, you can explore the charming chalet-lined streets on foot, in a horse-drawn carriage or by any of the electric vehicles available.
A year-round ski destination, Zermatt has slopes for every kind of skier – from the seasoned to the novice. Equipped with ski schools, luxurious lifts and cable cars, the resort town offers everything you need for an adventure in the snow. Depending on what you're after, head to Sunnegga, Gornergrat or Klein Matterhorn for superb pistes and après-ski options. It’s also well worth your time to take Europe’s highest gondola lift to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, where you can soak up panoramic views of the pristine Alpine scenery from 3,883 metres above sea level.

Zermatt is a lovely place to reconnect with nature. The pure alpine air, the gorgeous scenery, the walkable village (car-free with no pollution) and the climb up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Gornergrat made this trip a most memorable one. Should be on everyone's bucket list!

Zermatt is a beautiful town with old style Swiss houses with pretty flower windowboxes coupled with the amazing Matterhorn - which you can get specatcular views of even without going up a mountain (the picture is taken from close to the rope park at the end of town). The trip to Gornergrat is very much worth it but you do not need to book in advance - check the webcams beforehand to see if you can actually see the spectacular view before going up - it's a lot of money if you will just see cloud (and it is often cloudy!) We hiked from Sunnegga to Zermatt on the "direct route" - this is really hard going, steep and rocky. I thought being a yellow route it would be easier but it's more like a red-white one. We loved the cafe Fuchs for lovely cakes and coffees and pizzeria Molino for great pizza.

Places to hike around. Wonderful touristic place. It's good it'd a car free zone. You can rent a bike and ride around. Places to rent from affordable prices to luxurious hotels. I enjoyed my stay.
Great place to visit.

Great place to visit. Two days are enough in summer. By half day pass and kids under 15 will go free. Check with live camera first and best is to leave early as later in the evening the clouds can ruin the view

I've wanted to see the Matterhorn for 50 years and finally did. I was thrilled. Zermatt is being overrun by development and tourists. The city s allowing giant modern monstrosities to be built 2 feet in front of charming 100 year old hotels TOTALLY blocking views in any direction. Seems like Las Vegas had a better city plan. The "magic" & "charm" of Zermatt is on life support.
