Nestled in the mountains of the Western Ghats, Munnar is situated in the Indian state of Kerala. One of the largest tea-growing regions of India, this place boasts a distinct flora and fauna that attracts nature enthusiasts from all over the world.
The postcard-perfect town of Munnar offers green rolling slopes and numerous waterfalls. Attukal Falls, cascading down from a height of 1,000 metres, is located ten kilometres away from the main town. Set in the middle of a dense forest with undulating terrains, this site is a hub for trekkers and adventure seekers as well. After admiring the scenes of Attukal Falls, you can explore the renowned Echo Point. The picturesque location, with its tranquil lake and misty hills, is also known for producing a distinct echo if you shout something out in the open.
Munnar is one of the best places in Kerala to admire the traditions and deep-rooted culture of the state. Make a stop at Kalarai Kshetra, a centre that organises initiatives to promote and celebrate the dance culture of Kerala. Here, you’ll be able to watch the powerful Kalaripayattu – a centuries-old martial art form-turned-dance said to be the predecessor of kung-fu and karate. At Kalarai Kshetra, you’ll get to see the elegant and renowned Kathakali, an Indian dance form featuring heavily-painted faces and soothing Carnatic music. After a peek into the state’s colourful culture, head to the Tata Tea Museum for a glimpse of Munnar’s pre-tea plantation times.

Best place to visit. 3 days stay can be ideal. Kozhugu malai view point we missed. 1.8 kM Zipline and jeep ride to that point was awesome. (Rs3250/person on week day and Rs 1750 on week ends) Tea estate views and Botanical garden water stream was mind relaxing. (RS 100) Elephant ride at Mattupatti dam was good. (600/person) For South Indian breakfast I would suggest Hotel Saravana bhavan at City center and Non Veg dinner at Alibhaba and 41 dishes hotel was also good with nice ambience. Driver also suggested ROMA in city center. I would suggest to visit before Feb as it will be hot after that.
Excellent location but carefully select the hotel.

The environs are great.

The environs are great. However, the town itself is overly congested and there appears to be no supervision of traffic, which runs wild on the streets shared by humans, as in much of India. However, I think more should be expected of a town that exists because of tourism. It needs to be more tourist friendly, and by that I mean cleaner, better organized, less dangerous for pedestrians. The streams running through Munnar are filthy with trash. Is there no governmental or community effort to clean this up? Really, I am sad to see it, and I feel that Munnar is being ruined so that within a reasonable amount of time unless there is an effort by the community, it will no longer be worth much for tourism.
