Fleece always a great place to stay, only issue, as hotel has only been reopened for a few months, arrived on Sunday only to find restaurant and bar not open in evening, besides that lovely stay, and staff as usual really great

This castle is located in a quiet, remote area—yet still not far from the town center of Carlisle—and has lovely grounds to explore. The interior is grand, and the staff are friendly and accommodating. It’s a very peaceful place.

Oh, it's a hive of activity and we love it.

Oh, it's a hive of activity and we love it. The Lanes shopping centre, right at the heart of Carlisle is a must for shoppers. It's great to see this in the city centre, where other towns and city planners have allowed the destruction of city centres by allowing out of town retail parks to cause shoppers to abandon the heart of these great places, Glasgow and Dumfries to name just two. The night life is also amazing with pubs to suit all styles and budgets and some are a real laugh. If you are into your history there's a castle right in the middle if the city centre too. The only issue in August 2025 I'd the roadworks and infrastructure improvements which have been going on for ages but I'm sure once complete it'll be a much easier city to drive in.

    Small but interesting cathedral.

Small but interesting cathedral. The history display in the crypt v good. Tullie House very good. Dinosaurs, Romans and other things. Castle interesting. Friendly staff. But the castle itself could do with more info. Lots of empty rooms but no descriptions on the walls. Centuries of history deserve more explanation.

We found the centre by the station very unattractive, noisy and difficult to drive through, particularly for disabled parking near to restaurants. Our hotel was a little out of town so it was very convenient to have a good Asian restaurant next door to it. There is a good pedestrianised shopping precinct and an excellent, large park by the river, with good facilities, attractive features and leading out into open fields.

I lived in Carlisle in 2015 and left my heart there, so I think I may take sides here, but I like that it is small, you can go by the riverside, lots of parks to visit, it was cleaner 10 years ago, but I don't complain, always better than where I live now, in the Midlands. The hospital has a new endoscopy building (I'm endoscopy nurse, so I like this). I noticed all the places I use to eat in are still there. I love the little train station, the Cathedral and the Castle. The surroundings of the Cathedral are amazing, they built this cafe, it was full when we walked by, you can find tranquillity and meet your spirituality. From Carlisle you can go to the seaside in 40 minutes, to New Castle in an hour, to the lake district (I love Keswick) in 50 minutes or less.

Lovely 2 night stay in the gorgeous Willowbeck Lodge. The staff were friendly and helpful and we were warmly welcomed each time we used the hotel's facilities. Food was fresh and of a superb standard, both breakfast and evening meal. Attention to every detail can be seen and the housekeeping staff are doing a great job, the lodge was spotless. Location ideal for both a day out in Carlisle and to jump back on the motorway. A little gem.... not to be missed. We will be back.

A nice little B&B in Carlisle which is a 10 min walk from the station and more homely and pleasant than the other options in town. The hotel was very accommodating for my unexpected late arrival and also allowed me to check out late to suit my work arrangements. Breakfast was cooked to order and, again, the owner was very accommodating for dietary requirements. The room was very small but with everything required and comfortable.

I needed an overnight stay but wanted to avoid the city centre. The Cumbria Park was an excellent choice. I wanted for nothing. It is a bit old fashioned but was a far better ( and cheaper) bet than the city centre or the chain hotels on the edge. Give it a go.
