Nice little town with a high street full of shops, cafe's and restaurants. We enjoyed walking through the town, its not picturesque but surrounded by countryside.
We enjoyed breakfast in a café and the staff were lovely and friendly.

A bustling English market town (the Friday market is held through the High Street). served by buses from Aldershot, Petersfield, Winchester and Basingstoke which stop almost directly outside The Swan. The mainline train station is a fair walk from the The Swan & town centre, but taxi's are on hand (business hours), if you don't fancy the walk. A good range of shops (Sainsbury's, Iceland, Co-op, charity shops, tattooist, Greggs, fancy goods, hardware store, newsagent, other pubs, live music venue 'The Lounge Bar' in the community centre, etc).
In the oldie-worldie open street town centre - much better in my opinion than the covered shopping centre's like Basingstoke -fresh air much better for people. Parking is at a premium, with car parking behind The Swan (for Patrons) or behind the town centre shops with public conveniences and a park nearby. A good place to stay if you're interested in The Bluebell Railway as Alton train station links directly to it too.
Excellent stay for a place to visit for a day out, weekend/long weekend or a holiday base for visiting other nearby attractions, with things to do if it's wet.

An interesting town with lots of history.
An interesting town with lots of history. Huge number of hostelries, and seemed to be a good range of places to eat. As is common in many towns currently, lots of vacant premises and closed shops. Still things for us to discover though so will return.

No help offered with bags yet toom to floors up.
No help offered with bags yet toom to floors up.
Not the upgraded twin room we booked. Given a standard room which was a cramped attic room with just skylight.
No heating in late October, 8C outside, on a chilly night, has to put cloths on in bed!
Extraction fan in bathroom not working - smelly - and more cold when opening the small skylight.
No hair dryer as per room details.
Very shabby worn carpet.
Ask for restaurant menu at reception but told to use QR in room but it linked to a Christmas promotion, err! When found, several levels deep on the website, the menu was too small to read on a phone - hopeless - so went Pizza Express down the street where food and service was excellent.
Bacon served at breakfast was under done, very rubbery. Rasher oddly folded half so would never cook well. Needed another 20-30 mins in the oven.
Greeted but not offered toast at breakfast until end.
Staff only doing the minium and nothing to meet expectations.
At checkout we were not asked about our stay - err!
Fire alarm at 6am on a Sunday which can happen anywhere but all fires doors still closed still after 10am so exiting room with luggage was challenging.
Dreadful. Never again. A Premier Inn is twice as good at half the price.

Lashamn gilder sotiety is the best experience, the steam train also very nice, Pourtsmouth marine museum is also a very nice day trip, we had 4 packed days with activetys, recommend traveling to Alton
Staff were very good - friendly, helpful and thoughtful. We had three rooms and they were flexible about check-out on two of them but understandably the third room had to be vacated on time as it was booked by someone else. That's a nice touch to say you don't need to check out too early if we don't have a booking on your room. Breakfast was very nice and the staff / chef were very ameniable to a few additions we needed (some fruit in the porridge). The hotel was warm and cosy.
Stayed for 2 nights as a couple whilst attending a friends wedding. Good sized, clean room. Well equipped with tea/coffee, TV, iron/ironing board in room. Good bathroom with full bath. Location right next to Alton station and taxi offices and free parking onsite so easy transport options nearby. Friendly staff and tasty buffet breakfast. Not a luxury property but had everything we needed, was good value for money and would definitely stay again.
This hotel is in the heart of the city, and you are moments from the high street with lots of amenities. Although you are still able to get a good nights sleep. The staff are super helpful, friendly and very accomodating. Beth is great!
I have stayed there a further 5 more times since my first stay, and will use this hotel whenever I am in Alton.
Beds are comfy and high, the bathroom is clean, and a home away from home.
The hotel room was like a little apartment with a door directly to outside with a very big bathroom rooms modern and clean all you could ask for it was there tea and coffee towels provided also dinner was very nice and staff friendly couldn’t fault it ! Would recommend and would stay again perfect for a night away or could of even stayed a week there really ! Lovely rural location also
Perfect location for the Alton Watercress Line. Very cheery and helpful staff, especially on parking, staff member moved their own car for us to park. Room clean, bathroom clean and lovely hot shower. Bed a little soft at the head area and a little small, but still fine. Unairconditioned but working fan provided, and large window to open, a peaceful, stay with no issues, very pleasant.
There is nothing good about this property.
It’s unsafe for a girl to stay here as there is no main door lock or anyone on reception.hence anyone can come up as its on top of a pub a lot of drunk people there making noise and there is a way through that pub to hotel .a drunk guy been knocking on all 5 rooms and shouting darling darling . There r no cctv at all for safety
Lovely room, large bathroom , good shower and plenty of white towels . Warm & spotless . It was just so comfortable & quiet as it was at the rear of the hotel.
The dining room was inviting & all the glasses on the tables sparkled ! The food at dinner & breakfast was fantastic ! Plenty of parking too!
The staff were very supportive and could not help enough. I have stayed at the hotel many times before and they understand my medical requirements and supported my very well. Parking was nice and easy and they have sufficient spaces allowing you to get in and out of your car.
Breakfast was good though service was quite slow. The hotel has been recently modernised and is well decorated.
The golf facilities were excellent and the golf professional very friendly and accommodating.
The location is beautiful in wooded Hampshire countryside.
The Crown Hotel is in a good location on the high street not far from the railway station. The room is a small single bed with an attached bathroom, TV and kettle which was clean and tidy.
The big cooked breakfast was extra but well worth it as it was very nice.
The Swann is an old hotel with bags of character bang in the middle of town. The staff are friendly and very helpful . Our room, number 10, was at the back of the hotel and was well presented and clean. Nice comfortable bed. We would stay there again
Situated in a quiet and peacful rural location, the farmhouse mini-hotel offers tranquility, first class hospitality and excellent meals cooked to order. If you should arrive by train, as I did, the hotel is 20 minutes easy walk along the flat.
The hotel had not fully reopened and no breakfast available before 10, which did not suit my schedule. Bed was comfortable, although the room was a bit sparse. Location very convenient. Did not sample the restaurant for dinner.
The check in was straightforward, choice of breakfast items was very good and the staff were very pleasant. The bed, was comfortable and the location of the hotel was ideal.
