Everything was amazing, starting from the front desk contact with the receptionist, an absolute wonderful chap that explained everything very clearly and was very sociable. We were nominated Guest Of the Day and found a sweets basket in our room, that was very nice of them to consider.

Reading FAQ: Tips for every trip

Work and Play Beside the Thames

At the meeting point of the Thames and Kennet rivers, affluent Reading is close to London, yet far enough to feel completely different. For this reason it is an important business hub, particularly for IT. The M4 motorway runs directly from here to Heathrow Airport, and trains from its station terminate at Paddington.

The town has literary connections to Jane Austen – whose school was in the Abbey Gateway – and Oscar Wilde, who was imprisoned in its jail. Nowadays, the Reading Festival is its biggest cultural event and has earned a place in the town hall museum. However, its most impressive exhibit is a replica of the Bayeux Tapestry.

The Reading shopping options include Broad Street and The Oracle, a riverside complex also housing bars, cinemas and restaurants. The river continues south to one of the town’s green spaces, some housing golf courses. Forbury Gardens features a bandstand and large lion statue, and next door are ruins of an abbey founded by Henry I.

Potential day trips include the Roman remains at Silchester, and river cruises to Henley-on-Thames, while sport lovers should visit the Madejski Stadium, home of Reading FC and London Irish rugby club.

Booking.com’s Reading accommodation includes hotels with spas, cheap apartments and guest houses with parking.

Reading was a delight. Black cab driver was exceptional.

Reading was a delight. Black cab driver was exceptional. Courteous to other drivers and extremely kind and helpful to me. His name sounded something like Merisha (Pakistan) . A good human being. Everyone in Reading was so nice. It was surprising so close to London. Gail’s coffee shop was excellent.

Wonderful stay!

Wonderful stay! The hotel has a lovely historic charm, the room was spotless and very comfortable, and the breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. A big thank you to the manager and all the staff for being so friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We also really appreciated the room upgrade! We had a fantastic 2 nights here and would definitely stay again if we're back in Reading.

Lots of interesting bits hidden around if you know where to look; like the banksy on the side if Reading Gaol, the Reading Museum has a replica Bayeux Tapestry in there, the Reading Abbey ruins were interesting to look at and the Forbury gardens are nice to walk around. Centre has lots of shops, lots of restaurants available.

I was on my own but felt very safe.

I was on my own but felt very safe. Reading has a wonderful history and I'm glad I took a walk to see the beautiful Abbey Ruins before I left. Excellent shopping centre too, if that's your thing. Brilliant transport links to London and Heathrow.

We lunch at Richfields deli and sandwich shop.

We lunch at Richfields deli and sandwich shop. We did not get to do much exploring except the area around hotel. We tried to eat at Jollybees and never got the kiosk to be our friend. We ate at Mcdonalds nearby and the kiosk was top notch. the meal at this mcdonalds was very good. The quality of meat and vegetables top notch. I dont usually eat at chain restaurants. glad i did. too bad for Jollybees. We got up and tookthe railbus to Heathrow which worked quite well. The ride was not very long and we arrived at desired terminal. This option was better for us as we did not want to drag our luggage thru the train and tube stations. Also if you get ticket in advance it cheaper...Still good choice.

I took the train to Reading and if you have a longer stay...

I took the train to Reading and if you have a longer stay then you can jump on a train for a day out of the city to somewhere like London. The shopping centre has all the major popular stores and lots of places to eat whilst wandering around. There is the Oracle, a large shopping complex with shops and places to eat. There are so many excellent places to eat out both daytime and evening, you'd need to go on a diet once you get home. Buses run regularly if you want to wander further field than the town centre. The Abbey Ruins are well worth a visit and you can sit on benches and take in the quiet atmosphere of what remains of the buildings and surrounding garden areas. The Town Hall contains a small cafe, lovely clean toilets and also leads to the Museum and galleries with ancient artefacts such as pottery, jewellery and implements and even mosaic flooring. There is anecdotal evidence exact hand made replica of the massive Bayeux Tapestry on the upper floor and pieces of sculpture and paintings in other smaller rooms. On the ground floor the exhibits are designed the exhibits to interest younger people and more interactive, so could be useful on a rainy day for family enjoyment. As a special treat I was taken to the private Lido, not for children, with an outdoor swimming pool and heated small sit-in pool too. There are 3 different types of saunas and ice cold or hot showers and small changing rooms each with a shower. there is a bar and eating area and you can have massages and beauty treatments but I didn't have time to try them out. As my trip was a family visit I will have to return to Reading to check out the many other options that I didn't have time to take a look at.

The hotel was reasonably priced and has a large car park. Location wise, it is walkable into Reading Town Centre but you would probably need to get a taxi back (we did this and it was only £8). Room was spacious, bed was comfortable, bathroom was clean, shower was hot & powerful. Overall a decent one night stay.
