The Freezer Hostel & Culture Center, hotel in Arnarstapi

Located on western Iceland’s Snaefellsnes Peninsula, this former fish processing factory has been converted into a professional theater and artsy hostel. Free WiFi access is available throughout.

This is an amazing place. I run an arts center in the US and was intrigued that this remote arts center in Iceland also had a hostel and rooms to rent so we gave it a try. It's out toward the end of the beautiful Snæfellsnes peninsula and national park. It was also less than 10 minutes away from the whale watching tour we took out of Olafsvik, which is not to be missed. We stayed in one of their rooms that had a full bed and bunkbeds and our own bathroom. It was really comfortable and there was a great common area with a bar and all kinds of board games. Our room was off the theater and that night locals were watching a football match between Iceland and the Ukraine; much to their chagrin, Iceland lost. If you're looking for a unique place to stay and you want to support the local arts scene, this is your place!

I was climbing the glacier Snæfellsjökull with a group of people from FÍ (Ferðafélag Íslands). Arnarstapavegur is an excellent place to use as base for that activity as well as exploring the Snæfellsjökull National Park.

The breakfast was excellent and the staff was helpful. Very nice restaurant there on premise. Room was sparse and simple but super clean and new and the bed was fabulous! Super comfy. Great location. Easy to get to and nice things to see there. Perfect for a one night stay but not for longer.

We drove the Snaefellsjokull Park and peninsula.

We drove the Snaefellsjokull Park and peninsula. Fascinating. From the small churches. The wild ocean and black sand beaches. The bird cliffs. Waterfalls. Lava fields and the glacier from many viewpoints. We had a wonderful lunch at Gilhakki Kaffihus in Hellissander. A charming little coffee house. You can do the loop in one day. There’s so much to do and see that two days would be even better. I would find a day trip from Reykjavik too rushed. Glad we stayed in Arnarstapi and drove through to Stykkisholmur

I liked the place, the cottage was very nice and comfortable, walked from Arnarstapi to Hellnar (2,5 km). A beautiful walk along the see. Had lunch at Fjöruhusið, had delicious fish-soup, waffles and coffee. A must to experience, very original. Arnarstapi has two restaurants that were open July 2020. Both decent, one is part of the hotel and more upscale. There is no shop in the area, so you have to take all necessities with you, even matches and tampons were not to be found! Lot's of beautiful sights around the area and the glacier is very close. We visited Lýsuhóll natural pool, really nice although quite primitive. Overall a very nice experience and the nature sights are breathtaking.

Tiny town with beautiful vistas/views and hikes. Not much variety of food options, but a handful of restaurants and some good fish and chips to be had! All extremely walk-able and I'd recommend a nice evening walk along the coastline as an activity.

Arnarstapi is a quaint little fishing village with lovely views and trails for hiking / walking. The cottages were a great place to stay for the evening on our self-drive tour of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Our room was clean and modern, yet cozy and rustic. We liked the self check-in, which made it easy for us to come an go on our schedule. Highly recommend for anyone that wants to spend proper time exploring the beauty of this area of Iceland!
