My favorite parts of the hotel were the beautiful shady courtyard and the common areas inside, but the room was very comfortable and clean with updated furnishings as well. The guest room size is on the smaller side, but that's expected in a historic hotel. I would love to stay in one of the rooms with a balcony overlooking the courtyard next time. Remember that the hotel is next to the railroad tracks (because of its historical purpose), so if you think that may bother you, bring white noise. We ate dinner one night in the courtyard and it was so relaxing to hear the fountain not far from our table. The service was very good and our dinners were excellent as well. The free breakfast was sufficient to start the day with a full stomach. On the breakfast buffet, they offered breakfast tacos, scrambled eggs, Texas-shaped waffles, oatmeal, fruit, cereal, juice, coffee and I'm sure there was more. Everything in the lobby and adjoining spaces was cozy and comfortable. The vintage tiles throughout the property were gorgeous and it was a "sweet" surprise to have fresh-baked cookies available for guests at the front desk.
Located off Interstate 10, this pet-friendly hotel is a 4-minute walk from Red Rock Ranch Tours. It features a daily continental breakfast, a seasonal outdoor pool and a business center.

This hotel was perfect for us due to it's location. We had a goodnight even though the railroad tracks were right behind our room. We hardly heard anything. We were able to walk to a restaurant.

From what I can see, the main purpose for people to stay in VanHorn is on the way to somewhere else. The beautiful El Capitan Hotel was a wonderful place to stay for our visit to Guadalupe Mountains National Park, but we didn't really see anything else of interest in the town. It's too bad the town leaders can't find other things to attract visitors.

Van Horn is a city where there are a lot of commuters coming in and leaving (especially workers in the trucking industry, but there were also a many families there as well (Spring Break time). Van Horn is a city where you stop to rest, not really to sight-see although areas like Marfa, Big Bend, McDonald Observatory, Davis/Guadalupe Mountain are nearby. Sunrises are beautiful.

Stayed here six years ago and is just as good then and now. Only change is the refrigerator was larger than last time. All was good in the room. Great to see that good places are still in business. Good staff on duty at midnight when we arrived at the motel.

Super 8 stay was very nice and restful; however, Sands Motel experience horrible due to no actual mattress and having to sleep on box springs! We drove around a bit just to look and all lodgings are easy to get to from Interstate 10. We did enjoy our meal at Lindsey's Cafe. I'm very particular about Spanish rice and I'd eat theirs any day and the staff was very nice.

Small town struggling probably due to the pandemic issues.
Small town struggling probably due to the pandemic issues. Many closed businesses. We did not stay for any visiting purposes, just an overnight for travel twice in one week (each way). We did have a great local Hispanic/Southwest style breakfast at Mom's Cafe, a tiny local gem. Another breakfast at Gilbert's restaurant because Mom's was closed on Monday was not bad, but not as good as Mom's.
WE stayed at this hotel 6 years ago and outside looks bad, but staff and rooms are good. Booking.com was the issue. I had made reservations and had the same date as the previous city in Arkansas. I went online to see if room was still available and found out at check-in that the room was cancelled because of the same date. They had a room available and everything worked out fine.
The lady who checked us in and showed us our room was so kind and friendly!
This is a great, old time motel in a small town that is very reasonable, safe and you get a good nights sleep without spending a lot on a hotel room, like at most other hotels
The ambience, the food, the service, etc. I also liked the hotel in general. I have stayed at historic hotels and liked this one very much. The only problem is mentioned in "What didn't you like"
A very good value for the price. Simple, no frills...but adequate and clean. The staff were friendly and helpful. Would recommend and stay there again anytime I pass through Van Horn.
The restaurant was cancelled, the staff responded quickly, politely and were fantastic, unlike Booking.com that was totally unresponsive, hotel cancelled with no charge
