Accommodations in Kotohira

Friendly staff. Lovely garden. Nice facilities.

Best hotel I've stayed at in Japan. Beautiful building, incredibly lovely and helpful staff. Meals were delicious and plentiful. I proposed to my new fiancee here and I'm so glad I did because the staff and the hotel could not have been any better.

Among the many hotels in the small town of Kotohira, Kotohira Riverside Hotel is one of the architecturally more pleasing ones, plus it is located on the bank of the river flowing lazily through the town. The rooms have view into the hills and over parts of the town (although some of the ugly hotel blocks or the nearby love hotel in pink clearly do not count among the three famous views of Japan ;-) ). The location is quiet, despite its proximity to the quaint Kotoden Kotohira train station and the JR Kotohira station, which is slightly farther away. Within a few minutes by foot, there are many restaurants as well as the covered shopping district. Also close by is the start of the stairway to Kenpira-san, the Shinto shrine that made Kotohira a famous place for pilgrims. Check-in was smooth, with very friendly and helpful staff (speaking a tiny amount of Japanese helps...). I got a spacious, lovingly decorated room with river view, a very comfortable bed, a good desk and all the usual amenities. The hotel being of moderate size, the breakfast buffet was not lavish, but still with a wide choice of tasty dishes – mostly Japanese, but also with bread, pastry, cereals, fruit etc. catering to Western palates. My stay was on one of the busiest weekends of summer (it was very hard to find lodging at all). Despite this, the price was moderate, making this hotel very good value for the money.

Hotel is close to the theme park as it is the only hotel associated with the theme park. BUT the hotel and theme park is quite far from the train station. There is a free bus shuttle but runs infrequently. We ended up taking taxis to the facility . The hotel is huge and it had lots of things that could accommodate the large crowd: Pool and game rooms for children, large onsen baths, large self serve restaurant, and a big store for shopping.

We had a good private bathroom with tub.

Beautiful hotel in great location Sento bath was lovely and clean. Staff very friendly and helpful Would definitely highly recommend.

Great value for money, Massage on 8th floor

We booked the room that had the private bathroom and it was a huge and fabulous room. Very traditional. The staff were super helpful: they helped us organize one of our activity that required a taxi, ropeway, etc… We highly recommend this hotel.

What an amazing Hostel! The staff are all incredible! Friendly, kind and will go out of their way to help. Thanks for an amazing stay everyone 😊

It was a clean and new house. I really like the beds. They were so comfortable. And they had every amenity you can possibly need, including chilled bottled water and even snacks. The location was amazing.

The location is great, the host is really nice and knowledgeable, and it has everything you need. All the fox decor was whimsical and fun, too!

This is a very modest place. Centrally located. No elevator, so you need to carry your luggage upstairs in steepy stairs. No chairs or stools. Just a bed - futon style. You need to collect the key from a different place, nearby but difficult to find. The shared kitchen is dirty and smells bed. They say they speak English, but they don't. And like many places in Japan, there is no early check-in or late check out.

The space and cleaness. Value for money.

The facility was centrally located. The owners and staff were very accommodating. We were able to communicate adequately even though they didn't speak English and we didn't speak Japanese. The onsens were super clean and the water was toasty. We were impressed with our experience and would not hesitate to stay at the Takaraya again if we ever return to Kotohira.

We went to Kotohira without knowing much about it, apart that there was a beautiful temple but did not expect the stay at our hotel to be the highlight of our trip! We loved experiencing staying at a traditional Japanese hotel and sleeping over futons on the tatami and having the private bath outside with view of the mountain. We also had kaiseki dinner both nights and it was an amazing experience, from the welcoming by the staff to trying each exquisite dish. The staff were very nice and gracious when our baby cried and yelled and we loved that the hotel was very inclusive to the point that it had a chair inside the elevator and carts for the elders to put their food trays while serving themselves in the buffet and there were cribs with wheels at the restaurant for families to put their small babies inside just next to their tables. Thank you for a great stay and exquisite Japanese experience!

This is a lovely old property, very close to the entrance of the Kompira shrine. Our Japanese-style room was large and comfortable, and we were delighted with the bath facilities. Dinner and breakfast and a welcome cocktail all were included and the meals were truly excellent. Highly recommended.
