probably not enough here to warrant more than a couple of days' sightseeing, but Bilbao is a real place - a great mix of elegance awith gritty industry and real peoples' lives. I'd recommend combining it with exploring deeper into Spain - either inland to Rioja, or along the northern coast. The Guggenheim is a must - but watch out as it's closed on Monday and you really need to go inside, although the building and external art works are worth a viewing anyway. Walking the old town is a lovely way to spend a few hours, although most shops close between about 2.30 and 5.30. Also, take a metro up to Portugalete and see the world's oldest Transporter bridge and have a coffee in the nice residential suburb at the estuary on the bay of Biscay. The Ribera market is wonderful, but if you don't have access to self-catering accommodation it's a frustrating visit, as you'll want to buy all those wonderful ingredients and get creative. Food and drink is at the heart of Bilbao and this part of Spain - whether it's drinking and tapas in the old town, or a glorious lobster paella in the new town, it's hard to get away from. Remember though, Spaniards eat very late - no meals possible before about 8.30 with 9.30-10 being a more normal time for dinner.
We contacted Bilbao greeters, who provided a personal guide FOC. Our guide was very knowledgeable about Blbao, and escorted us on a fascinating tour of the old town, the market, and everything else important in Bilbao (including a swimming pool with a glass bottom, watch the swimmers from below!) The Guggenheim is a must, as is the funicular just to appreciate why Bilbao is as it is. Use the Metro to get around, and visit the
I love the Spanish way of life , everyone is out late , all ages There are hundreds of bars and restaurants and most places aren't expensive as in Spain most people go out to have a coffee , eat and have a drink and socialise , it is all very noisy in a good way ! The old part of all towns are my favourite , they have a fantastic atmosphere and plenty of things to visit. Bilbao has changed since the Gugenhiem was built but it just adds to the excitement of this city..
Great place to spend a couple of days sight seeing. The walk by the river and into the Old City is fascinating. Moderniste buildings vie with the Ugly, like the Guggenhelm. In early evening it seemed that everyone and their family were hurrying somewhere; it buzzed with vivacity. Sadly, churches are mainly closed and the Cathedral was very disappointing. Many tapas bars abound and hunting for a restaurant serving 'man food' is time consuming. However, there is a restaurant next to the Ercilla which serves excellent food, fresh fish filleted at the table, and excellent wine at supermarket prices (we checked!). We shall return for longer to see those places missed this time.
Bilbao is impressive and there is lots to see. It rained frequently during my stay, and it is known to be rainy, so I imagine the season wasn't the only factor. Besides the actual temperature, there was something cold and uninviting about the city. It bustled a bit too much for me, although the views of tall, colorful buildings and trees on hills in the distance were pretty.
We gathered everything we needed for a picnic from the de la Ribera markets and caught the funicular up to the park in Artxander on top of the hill. Best picnic ever! Amazing view of the whole city and its surrounds. We also had a gorgeous time at a little bar/clothing shop called Koli on Calle Ripa on the canal, the owner is a beautiful human who brought us some much needed warmth :)
