Wonderful old city, easy to walk around all day. Take a free tour to get your bearings. Many churches worth a visit. Learn a bit about Jewish history here. Visit the gardens and climb the hills for beautiful views.
I found Vilnius to be a vibrant city easily navigable by walking with many religious, cultural and historical sights. The Christmas festivities were a great experience. Don't miss the museum in the old KGB headquarters.
I really like to visit time to time to make walks through the old town and feel the spirit of old Vilnius. Eat in small local food restaurants. It is worth to mention: the Vilnius hotels have a very high standard and reasonable prices.
Its important to mention that you can buy alcohol here from 10am - 8pm, on Sundays until 3pm. And there is food delivery after 10pm. So you need to plan arrival with food&drink hours of accessibility. Pubs & restaurants also opens around 10am/12pm, some of them at 3pm, so on weekends its not so its better to arrive before 6pm, just to have time to buy some food.
The cold came as a shock even though we had appropriate clothing. It meant walks were short and all journeys punctuated by breaks in bars, restaurants and museums - to defrost! However, that meant we saw a lot of Vilnius in a short time. It also helped that our hotel (Artagonist) was very central.
Vilnius is a small city that I believe one should only travel to if there already exists a specific interest in the (history of) the city. Generally, English is not a given. Taxi drivers will try to rip you off...(surprisingly it will still sound like you did a deal). If you are savvy and you are interested in Eastern European history this is a city you may want to stop at.
