It all depends on how thoroughly you want to visit Albania.
It all depends on how thoroughly you want to visit Albania. I travelled around the country for three weeks. In doing so, I found Durrës the place that impressed me the least. I stayed in a fairly good hotel and found the old town charming and pleasant. However, as far as sights are concerned, it is far inferior to other cities in the country (Berat, Gjirokastër, Shkodër, Tirana). I've already seen quite a few other Roman amphitheatres in my life and I found Durrës the least impressive. Of course, if you have enough time for the country, you can easily include Durrës in your travel plan. If you only have a limited number of days, it is best to go to Berat and Gjirokastër or to Shkodër as soon as possible. That is my personal belief. But in Durrës I also found everyone very friendly and sympathetic, as in the rest of the country. So first of all, consider how much time you have in Albania!

I have reservations about the beach operators.
I have reservations about the beach operators. Nowhere else, whether in Golem or Saranda, did we encounter such mess as in Durres. There were cigarette butts, cans, and broken glass everywhere. The situation might have been different if there had been trash bins. For me personally Durres beach that goes on for miles unfortunately is packed with sunbeds back to back!! Lots of seed weed/ dirty sea ☹️ little or no space to just put your towel down and go for a swim and then you get told off as they want you to pay for a sun bed!! Apparently their beaches aren’t public so I found out. Bars, restaurants and food absolutely delicious! On a par with anywhere in Europe. So don’t be miss led into thinking it’s cheap cheap. Sight seeing in the centre of Durres was really good. Easy to get around on the bus. I went on a tour inland with Albanianbus.com Which was brilliant!!! Trekking up a mountain. Durrës is a perfect place for beach goers as there are kilometres of sandy beaches all the way from Durrës. As I am not a big fan of this attraction, 2 days were enough for me. Durres is under development and there are lots of building...
Durres is under development and there are lots of building sites. We were disappointed that the archeology museum was closed for a major refurbishment project. There is a Roman arena which is worth a visit. There will be a railway link to Tirana but that too is under construction. The Durres town seafront is lined with places to eat. Lots offer seafood and Italian style cooking. It is done well. Durres beach strings along the coast south of the main town. Between the beach side and main town is a major ferry port. You can walk around it in about 45 mins along a flat route.

We liked the deeper waters even though the shallows were murky. We loved the lounge chairs and umbrellas which at 5 euros was very affordable. Food was amazing and delicious. Promenade was lovely at night with lots of people. Durrës was not as clean as we thought it would & lots of stray dogs early am and at night which was quite heartbreaking. Lots of traffic if driving, quality of roads in areas quite poor.leszekAustralia
