Unfortunately we arrived quite late on Saturday afternoon so all the shops except the Grocery stores were shut. I would have liked to arrive much earlier to have a look at the local makers stores that I found as we wandered around the town on Sunday morning after breakfast. I loved all the statues and wooden installations around the town. It brings an eclectic atmosphere and artistic character to this small town. We enjoyed the walking paths around the levy bank which showcases some of the sculptures. We stayed overnight at the Royal Cafe & Accommodation (highly recommended and motorcycle friendly), for dinner we walked up to the Commercial Hotel for a delicious meal. Locals were all friendly and welcoming. Walcha is a great little place to stop if you are planning on doing the fabulous Oxley Highway Motorbike ride through to Wauchope. If you are a motorcyclist - it is VERY cold - it was minus 3 degrees in Walcha overnight. Make sure you wear lots and lots of warm layers before riding.

Walcha seems a lovely town but was not at its best being in a terrible drought and surrounded by bushfires. Could not believe how dry the land was. Would love to visit again and stay a bit longer to really see the town at a better time.

Move away from your standard travel destinations and visit places like Walcha where the locals are doing it tough at the moment due to the drought. Despite all of the challenges these bring the local community demonstrate positive expectancy that things will improve. This attitude is a lesson to us all
