“Beautiful” city with an nice combination of old and modern architecture, however you’ve to appreciate the decay of some parts of the city somehow. If you do, you can find some very interesting places with impressive stories behind it. Also the people are very warm and welcome you to their city. Public transport is available but the frequency is quiet low, especially in the weekend so you best plan your trips beforehand
I don't know how is Charleroi in his good days, but now it was with a lot of empty buildings and stores in terrible condition, very few people on the streets after dark, BUT it has a very good library, Moliere, with excellent staff and a lot of books . I had not time for much, because of my professional involvement, but if possible, I would have explored some more the library.
Stayed at the ibis right opposite the main rail/bus station. Charleroi is not the nicest place to stay with lots of down and outs around the main railway station asking for money. The place has seen better days and be careful at night its dark around the station with gangs hanging around...
I walked around Charleroi for several hours but really felt like there was nothing to see. Even the tourist office which I found seemed to be for sale. The town is trying to make an effort to improve itself, but too many buildings are still empty. Even in the hotel the brochures to visit places were all about other towns in the Walloon region, but no single map of Charleroi of suggestions of things to see there (apart from one museum). The hotels seem to be mostly there for tourists flying on Charleroi airport and then traveling further to other places in Belgium.
We were completely uninformed about Charleroi. That is why we decided to visit it, during our stay in Brussels. But, that was very very unpleasant experience. I felt unsafe, everything was ruined, and empty. Because of all mentioned that was (at the same time) the last time to be in Charleroi .
Have passed through Charleroi a few times and it always looks run down. Around the main train/bus station at night there is always groups of youths shouting/drinking beer from cans and beware of the beggars asking for money. Only stayed here because it is near the airport for the Ryanair flights. Stayed all over Belgium and its a great place to visit but Charleroi is not one of them.Try Namur and Dinant lovely towns to visit...
