Mons is the site of the first contact between the British Expeditionary Force and the invading German armies in August 1914. The British were stuck in a difficult position owing to the fact that their flanking French allies had retreated without informing the British, and they had to dig in along the Mons-Conde-Charleroi canal, which they held against all odds for the day of 23rd August 1914. Not only were the first shots exchanged here, but also the first two Victoria Crosses were won during the battle. If you have a good guide or guidebook, the greater part of the battlefield is largely unchanged, and after a day of looking round, you have the town square of Mons, where the troops rested before moving up to contact. The square is unchanged, and anyone who has seen any of the photos taken at the time will be able to situate themselves easily - while enjoying a beer of a meal at any of the town's excellent bars and restaurants. I recommend the Lebanese restaurant on the main square.
The area around the railway station is under contruction (for years); however this small city is charming. The central square with a renaissance city hall and many terraces is beautiful and lively and there are some interesting sights to see (museums, church, belfry). On the other side of the station is a big modern shopping mall.
This was just a stopover on our homeward journey. There is a HUGE redevelopment at the station just opposite the hotel, although they had stopped work when we got there. We might come back in two years to see the work when it is finished. Right now it looks like a giant spaceship!
Rather lovely city to walk in and enjoy the cosy streets. The Belfry and historical city hall and surrounding buildings are very nice to see and visit. The city offers big brand shops but also smaller niche stores when you look for it. Great chocolate milk by the way at the Texas café :)
Town has a much old world charm. Can be run down in places and main shopping street appears to be struggling to compete with large out of centre shopping complex and the internet. The Cathedral is worth a visit. Le Grand Pres shopping centre is massive with a huge range of high quality vendors.
Very clean and organized oldtown and city center, small just fit for walking Nice restaurants and bars Great buildings of city history, very well preserved But relatively expensive tax, grocery store prices
