Lovely city, interesting road design, with many tourist spots including Domaine de la foret perdu where you can skate in the forest. Restaurants were a tad underwhelming and the museum attached to the prison was overpriced. The people seemed quite friendly. The buildings were quite beautiful, as was the calmness at night.
Trois Rivieres' downtown is a charming mix of old and new. Walks along the St Lawrence river are rewarding and inviting. Loads of restaurants, bars and terraces along the "Boulevard des Forges" in the downtown area can be found. The city has plenty of great festivals throughout the summer and for the car enthusiasts, there is the GP3R each year. All in all, the city is a great place to spend a few days roaming around its downtown area.
I knew this small city from a long ways back, having studied at the University. Quite simply, it has morphed from an industrial, gritty and bland site, to a very clean, rehabilitated post industrial vacation destination. The downtown was earlier decimated by suburban malls, and the relentless, painful downsizing as the massive pulp & paper mills closed down. It has been reborn as a premier destination for cafés, bistros, B&B`s, and boutique hotels. It is clean & safe, with some surprizingly good restos. And the trends are continuing. It is also a first rate step off for great eco-tourism, with its deep history showcased in beautiful heritage buildings, and a great location on the St Maurice river, and easy access, among others, to the Parc national de la Mauricie, and the Reserve Mastigouche.
We loved driving around this town. It is half-way between Montreal and Quebec City and much smaller. Felt like you could get a real view of life and culture in Quebec away from all the tourists. Nice halfway point. Liked the outdoor restaurants downtown, which are all located in the same area. Went to a few museums and learned about the history of the area.
We stayed two nights in TR giving is basically a full day there which is not long enough. We had been told it was a backwater town useful for stopping at as an overnight but actual there are lots of things to do and plenty of restaurants as well. We went on the river cruise which was pleasant but slightly overpriced for the 90 minute your. We visited the Old prison, best booked in advance especially if your in English required. We asked in the morning and they were running just one English tour which was that afternoon which we then took. We visited the ‘Pop’ Museum which is attached too. This is not a music museum but covers an eclectic array of things to do with TR and Quebec. A lot but not all was available in English. Angeline’s Italian restaurant on Rue des Forges (main restaurant strip) was fanastic with large and tasty portion sizes. We went to Cirque du Soleil in the evening at the Amphitheatre an outdoor arena with partial side walls and a roof with no rear wall. Yes I would definitely go back.
We enjoyed strolling by the river on a sunny day, the scenery is lovely. There were numerous nice cafes, restaurants and bars around the Rue des Forges, which is only a short stroll from the waterfront. It was a nicely busy area on a sunny weekend in June.
We had a beautiful suite that was comfortable as well as roomy. The staff member we spoke to spoke English and was very friendly and accommodating.
