Beach 1 which is the popular beach by the street, it's way too crowded and noisy on the weekends. The beach is very urban, right by the street, no transition area or vegetation. Maybe cool for young people there to people watch but definitely not my ideal family beach on the weekend. We were there for the Monday so I can tell it was much less crowded and noisy then. But if you take the boardwalk to the right of Beach 1, you see a beautiful natural landscape, birds and some nice sand as well. Enough to set up tent with family in a much more natural setting. As a family we really enjoyed that. Quiet and beautiful.
We also went to Beach 3, in the Provincial Park, and that was just awesome. Cleared beach, lots of space to play enjoy the lake. A few picnic benches and shaded areas for families. 20 dollars for all day parking.
Water is a bit cold but the kids truly enjoyed it.
The city itself was disappointing, very commercial and spread out. Lots of different restaurants to choose from, but mostly of unhealthy foods such as poutine, hotdogs and burgers. The big chains are all there.
So I would recommend this place for the beach. Except for minigolf, I didn't see much else for the kids to do.
