Somewhere to Love

Surrounded by Lake Geneva and glorious Alpine peaks, tranquil Montreux has enchanted artistes through the ages. Lord Byron was so inspired by the style and setting of waterfront Château de Chillon that he wrote a poem about it. Nowadays it is one of Switzerland’s most popular attractions.

Freddie Mercury also fell in love with Montreux and a lakefront statue in Place du Marché commemorates this former resident in typical pose, with one arm raised to the heavens. Queen fans flock here for the annual Memorial Day, just one musical festival hosted by this town. The most famous is the 2-week Montreux Jazz Festival, held in the Music & Convention Centre.

On the opposite side of town is Audiorama (the Swiss National Audiovisual Museum), near a funicular railway which climbs the hill. Further up the slopes is the family-friendly Rochers-de-Naye ski area, while the Les Pléiades pistes overlook neighbouring Vevey. Down at the quayside wooden chalets house stalls of the annual Christmas market.

Summer activities include boat trips, hiking and the Montreux-Oberland-Bernois narrow gauge railway whose trains allow you to really savour the views…and a nice cup of coffee.

The train station also connects to Geneva, site of the nearest airport, and Booking.com offers luxury hotels, apartments with views and cheap B&Bs nearby.

Montreux is a beautiful city on the banks of lake Geneva. It has magnificent views and a wonderful old-town feel. We stayed just one night so we did not do much sight-seeing except to visit the statue of Freddy Mercury. Would like to come back and explore Chillon Castle.

Montreux is a beautiful place with lovely mountain and lake views. The walk on the promenade is relaxing and the sight of colourful flowers next to the lake are different every season and so refreshing. There are lots of restaurants on the lake side. It’s a joy to sit and watch the sunset over the lake. Montreux is one of my favourite place and I love to visit every year.

Montreux was wonderful to visit and the traveler cards the hotel provides gives you free access to public transportation and sites along with discounts is a great bonus. We used the busses and trains multiple times a day. We went to the Charlie Chaplin Experience which is very worth your time. The Chillon Castle and the Freddi Mercury Experience walking tour should also be included during your visit. It was warm, I would even say hot so being able to walk out and cool yourself off in the lake was wonderful. The city was setting for the Jaxx Festival to the quay form the Freddi Mercury Statue south to the Convention Center was full of tent and stages. We were north of this area and were not affected, lake access was normal and view were not impeded, I can't say that for hotels in this section of the lake area. Highly recommend this hotel.

A good centre for day trips on the lake and railway.

A good centre for day trips on the lake and railway. Montreux Riviera Card offers many free travel options within the area. For us a limited range of inexpensive restaurants (evening). The railway trip from Montreux to Rochers de Naye is easy to take with stunning views on the way up and at the top. Equally easy rail trip from Montreux to Gruyere.

This is our second stay in Montreux in what must be one of...

This is our second stay in Montreux in what must be one of the most photogenic towns in the World. A wonderful history of famous people who have lived there coupled with the Music Festival held every year. A bustling town with an abundance of lovely shops and Restaurants however the `gem` is the promenade along the side of the lake which is kept so clean and tended with flowers. Would thoroughly recommend a visit and a trip on one of the Steamers that plough the Lake throughout the day.

Comfortable size city (unlike Zurich). Mountains & the Lake all right there. Geneva is only 1 hour away by train. Several attractions to consider in between the two cities. Chateau Chillon recommended. Easy bus ride getting there.

We had a very pleasant stay at Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic in Montreux. The reception staff were extremely helpful and accommodating, the hotel was spotless, and we really appreciated its excellent location. We visited Montreux for the festival, and this hotel turned out to be very convenient for us. The only small downside was the paid parking across the street, which is not part of the hotel. We didn’t really have a choice but to use it, yet we still appreciate that there was at least a parking option available.

Beautiful la Belle Époque architecture! It feels like you're in a museum since the building dates back to its 19th century inauguration. Its interior is well decorated in that style and it brings you back in time to its golden years. The view is one of a kind and breakfast outside in Summer is simply superb! I was in town for the Montreux Jazz Festival and the hotel memory outlasted that of the performance I saw!

This is a 3 star hotel with a 5 star location. We had a room with a balcony overlooking the lake, and couldn't have been happier. And the welcome we got from Davide was amazing - he gave us a detailed run down on what to do in Montreux and could not have been more helpful.
