Sea, Oysters and Europe’s Tallest Sand Dune
Arcachon is a French resort on the Atlantic coast, about 55 km from the city of Bordeaux. Known for its oyster farms, Dune of Pyla, the long sandy beaches and the Victorian houses, this seaside city is a perfect holiday destination.
Set among the ocean and a pine forest, the breathtaking Great Dune of Pyla is the tallest sand dune in Europe. Reaching a height of about 107 metres and a length of 3 km, this natural miracle is a massive hill ideal for paragliding.

Arcachon is a lovely French seaside town. Lovely mix of architecture, great food and great shopping. Lots to do, swimming, walking, cycling, and boating. Great cycle out to the Dune de Pyla and the view from the top is fantastic! Lovely boat ride to Cap Ferret and again a lovely cycle to the lighthouse. Arcachon ticks all the boxes for a couples/ family holiday. No late bars or clubs so not for the younger ones.

We were warned that Arcachon is very touristy and although there were many there (mid June), it didn‘t come across that way. Nice beach and promontory with lots of cafes and restaurants. Shopping streets including covered market were also worth visiting. Park above the downtown was beautiful. We took a train to Bordeaux for a day (50 min) which worked out very well. The nearby Pilate dunes are worth visiting. A boat outing to Cap Ferret is also recommended. We liked Le Pitt for good oysters a bit away from the beach and with fair prices.

This is a charming cozy little beach town, and there are a lot of nice shops and restaurants and cafes within walking distance. The pedestrian zone and sidewalks are very wheelchair accessible, as are many (but not all) of the shops and restaurants. Most of the shops and restaurants we visited were very welcoming and they made us feel like they were genuinely happy that we stopped in. The sea and boardwalk along the beach are extra bonuses. But bring a windproof jacket and a rain cape just in case! One disappointment is the fact that the aquarium is closed and apparently has been for at least 2 years, and yet it is still on the tourist maps and websites. We really would have enjoyed the aquarium and we hope maybe it will be back again soon.

La dune du Pylat, la plage des Abatilles and a 2.5 hours cruis in the Bassin d'Arcachon were the highlights of our trip. The morning market is really good, especially to buy fruit and vegetables. The night market is nothing special, but ok for souvenirs. A lot of shops to explore (but they are closed in the evening, which I am not used to when it comes to beach cities). The sunsets by the beach are just breath-taking.
