It doesn't get any better than being on the major square and seeing the cathedral out of the room window. Also, parking and the big covered market are steps away, with shops and restaurants galore. The hotel is historic and the rooms have been done absolutely brilliantly. Modern comforts but totally respectful of history: antiques, wood panelling and floors, marble fireplace, carpets, great reading lights, lovely bathrooms. Fabulous breakfast (worth the11 euros extra): breads, cakes, boiled eggs, at least 10 different fresh fruits, good coffee, juices, yogurts, cheeses, meats, etc. Helpful and friendly staff. Metz was very icy and walking was a challenge! Good attractions and superb architecture and an excellent Information bureau. Great old streets, beautiful river walks, despite the cold! Had some great degustation lunches at a few Caves du Vin.must be a lovely town to explore in summer.you need an English language guide book as, naturally, all the attraction signs are in French.
Architecturally, it is fantastic. Lots to see in historic area regarding facades (art nouveau, art deco, etc.) And the gorgeous yellow stone provides a unity. The cathedral is grand. Unfortunately we did not have time for the museums other than the Pompidou branch so we can't comment on them. The Pompidou is a great addition to the city though.
Don't miss the Metz Cathedral with it's fantastic stained glass windows, The Covered Market, take a walk alongside the old ramparts and just walk around the old town and the Imperial Quarter admiring the varied architecture. The Chapelle des Templiers is small but worth a look.
boring provincial city, for couple of hours you have seen all highlights.. looking more like a German city than French.. Of course the cathedral is magnificent and the local archeological museum is definitely worth seeing.
Metz is a compact city in which travelers can walk to almost all interesting locations. It is somewhat off the tourist circuit, but that meant one could enjoy everything without contending with crowds. The city has large medieval quarter with a splendid cathedral and museum. It also has an interesting neighborhood filled with interesting "jungendstil" buildings built in the 1890-1914 period when Metz was under German rule. As an added benefit, one can easily take a train (two an hour) to see nearby Nancy and its splendid Place Stanislas (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
the plus: there are excellent museums and the city has really done an excellent job in valuing all the remainings from the past centuries. People are very nice. The restaurants are a bit expensive even comparing to Paris but the food is excellent. the minus: there were nearly no cabs at the train sation when I arrived at 7pm on friday and after waiting 45 min in a long line of people, i had to walk to my hotel next to the cathedrale. It was cold and I was tired so it was not a pleasant exprience. I was a disappointed and surprised the Metz Pompidou had no permanent collection.
Proximity to train station. Friendly owners. Clean room. WiFi available.
