A Fascinating Voyage through Art, History and Culture
Located near the borders of France, Germany and Luxemburg, the French city of Metz is the capital of the Lorraine region in the Moselle department. This destination has stunning architecture, as well as rich history and culture.
The Saint Étienne Cathedral is a massive Gothic structure, built of yellow limestone. This masterpiece along with the Defensive City Gates, are some of the most important landmarks in Metz.
You can wander around the picturesque streets, admire the buildings made of Jaumont stone and discover a mix of Italian, French and German architecture. The modern Centre Pompidou-Metz is home to great pieces of modern art by world-renown artists like Joan Miró, Henri Matisse and Picasso.
Set on the banks of the Moselle and Seille rivers, the city of Metz is reachable by train from Paris, Lyon, Nice, Marseille and Strasbourg. The monumental railway station of Gare de Metz-Ville is a Romanesque building with a magnificent clock tower and a stained-glass window.
The Metz-Nancy-Lorraine Airport is about 16 km away from the city centre and has flights to Toulouse, Cologne and Brussels. Booking.com offers a variety of hotels and apartments in Metz to choose from.

Really nice small city with some stunning architecture and riddled with history.
The central covered market was amazing with great places for lunch or a takeaway and there was a long street with all sorts of food including a great selection of French and Asian restaurants. A good range of shopping in the city centre but also some out of town areas too so a versatile place to visit.
We stayed in a great B&B on the other side of the lake to the city so could easily walk in but there was also plenty of parking around if you need to come in by car.
We can also recommend the Ouvrage Hackenberg Maginot Line Fortress as a fabulous historical site to visit with a tiny railway inside the hills of the fortress. They run different language groups each day with enthusiastic and welcoming volunteers who are lovely.
Do check websites for the various historical sites to visit though as I think most of them are volunteer run so aren't open every day or only after 2pm etc. so plan carefully :)

Cathedral very impressive; could only do 'the tourist train' as short on time, but saw other areas of city we could have spent more time visiting.
had dinner overlooking river and church in L'Assiette du Bouef - excellent.

The stained glass windows of the cathedral are wonderful, and so is the old city. Metz is a pleasant city, go for the flowery ice creams, they are beautiful and delicious. The free bus to centre Pompidou is a surprise.
La cour d'or is worth visiting.
I will strongly dissuaes you from booking an appartment from the organisation Rock &Share, they make promises they do not keep.

Beautiful city to walk around in.
Beautiful city to walk around in. Extraordinary cathedral if you are into architecture; Centre Pompidou-Metz is also superb from the perspective of architecture. Also: very extensive archaeology museum if you are into that. And there are great restaurants. Not too touristy (too far for day trips from Paris, in contrast to Reims). I did have a problem with the housing; best to avoid "rock-in-share" listings (I was charged for two nights, and also charged a "cleaning" fee, but was never able to pick up the key or enter the place).

Metz is an interesting city.
Metz is an interesting city. We hope to spend more time there, walking by the rivers and canals. Metz can't be blamed for bad weather. We just chose the wrong time of year for our trip. We now have maps and a guide to the city and hope to return. Due to the winding streets it can be difficult to find oone's way around but that can lead to interesting discoveries.

Pretty little French town.
Pretty little French town. All sights within walking distance. Large pedestrian zone. Excellent restaurants with ambience.
To visit: Cathedral, covered market, Centre Pompidou, Museums. Be sure to stroll through the pedestrian zone.
The hotel is in the centre of town so handy to everything. The hotel is in an older historic building but has been very well renovated to modern standards. The hosts were friendly and helpful. The room was spacious, comfortable and had a nice bathroom. Breakfast was excellent - very good quality food and lots of variety, even fresh squeezed orange juice and scrambled eggs. Tea and coffee making facilities were available in the dining room at all times.
Very nice barge, Gilles explained and showed us everything what we need to know in and about the barge. Perfect located, the walk to city centrer took 15 min. We could park our car just few meters away from the barge. During next Metz visit we are definetly comming back!
Excellent location, In the middle of a street full of bars and restaurants in the centre of Metz. But well isolated windows so no noise inside the rooms. Lovely decoration and everything you need for a city trip. Thank you
Hotel has beautiful authentic style. Few steps away from centre of the city with excellent restaurants and cafés. in addition there is free parking next to the hotel.
