Stayed here a long time ago in the 90s and it had an hasn’t changed. The bar is certainly more friendly and the rooms have a much cosier feel to them. From the moment you walk in you feel like you’re in an historic setting, and given it goes back to around 1571 you can see its heritage. Rooms are cosy, warm and have everything you need. Remember this is an old set of buildings so the floors creek and the plumbing is dated but don’t let this put you off because the bar is warm and the food is not only generous it’s top quality. Bar staff and the chef could not have done more -10/10 for both of them. Parking is round the back of the building but be careful with deep gravel especially in really wet conditions. It’s right on the A1 but we never heard a thing in the room probably be wise the walls are incredibly thick. Price was cheap. Sheets and towels super white and clean. Tea coffee and biscuits in the room. Good TV and WiFi also thrown in. Can’t fault this hotel for either large functions or a stop over, just perfect.

Our room, the Sir Isaac Newton suite, was one of the most beautiful rooms I have ever stayed in. As we come to the end of a months touring Ireland, Scotland and England this has been a highlight. The very comfortable bar was also an outstanding area to relax and enjoy a beverage before a beautiful dinner in the restaurant.

This is English hospitality at its best. From the amazing historic buildings to the bedrooms, restaurants, and bars. A warm welcome and attentive friendly staff throughout. Highly recommended.

Beautiful building. Attentive staff who made our stay for our sons wedding extra special
