We booked last minute because our boat trip back from Newcastle was cancelled due to storm: it was the only reasonably priced room we could find in the area and we were pleasantly surprised on our arrival. The hotel is situated in a small village with a few small shops close by. The room was clean and comfortable, and the area was quiet. The room felt cold at first when we dropped off our things, but was nicely warm by the time we got back in the evening. The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom modern and clean. At the ground floor is a large restaurant/bar where guests can grab a meal/drink. The restaurant and bar seemed to be well visited by travelers and locals alike. The meals were very tasty and promptly brought, plenty of choice. The restaurant is set up a bit like a maze, so most tables have some privacy. The location was beautifully decorated for Christmas, and it has fireplaces where one can sit with a cup of coffee or another drink for a chat. Really very inviting.

Beautiful and peaceful setting, views over parkland. Circular walk around estate. Spacious, comfortable and luxurious rooms . Historic features like original room shutters. Massive marble floored bathroom with free standing bath and separate power shower, double sinks. Washing machine and clothes airer meant we could wash and dry clothes. Great welcome from Susie and Curt. Full breakfast upgrade as well as the steak dinner and roast beef dinner were very well prepared by Curt. All can be recommended. Also great thnks to Tony Wood of Well Fed a few doors along who took care of the breakfast while Susie, Curt, their kid Rosie an Lowie and the dog Hugo started their holidays. A great place to stay if you want to discover the Borders. To be fully recommended.

We were using Lauder as base for visiting Edinburgh. Just spent one afternoon exploring the town. Enjoyed sandwich and tea at a Deli and walked around castle grounds . Train into Edinburgh from Stow worked well. Also drove to Dunbar for the day.

I particularly enjoyed the warm welcome, and the atmosphere in the restaurant and bar. The food at dinner and breakfast was top quality. I travel throughout Europe and stay in many hotels, and I have to say that this was the best hotel experience in many years.

Lauder is a great village with everything you need.

Lauder is a great village with everything you need. Spotty Dog for coffee and a Scotch egg, Flat Cat Gallery for gift shopping and cake. There is a butchers, post office, pharmacy and co-op. As well as a beautiful church, castle and surrounding areas with lots of history and natural beauty. An underrated gem

Excellent accommodation within a beautiful building of great historical significance and set in magnificent countryside. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful making our stay relaxing and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend the castle tour. Our guide (Norman) had a wealth of knowledge with regard to both the castle itself and the Maitland family who have occupied it over the centuries.

This is an lovely place to stay Margot was especially welcoming with our little dog . So nice to find a b&b of this quality that doesn’t mind having a well behaved dog to stay. We took a train from a nearby station 20 mins drive into Edinburgh. Enjoyed a sightseeing bus trip and then back to Lauder were we continued our journey the following day having slept in a lovely room with a comfy bed and excellent breakfast.
