Other than the magnificent abbey there are few obvious sites in Selby and it seemed to have few attractive places to eat. It is a pleasant town to walk around and there are good views from the bridge over the River Ouse. We particularly admired Wetherels - an old-fashioned department store founded in 1898 with a wealth of well-chosen merchandise. Long may it survive!

Selby is a nice town with a mix of amenities, there are historical places to visit and they have a gym, bowling and a canal which is very nice to walk beside. It is also within driving distance of York, Leeds and the Yorkshire Dales, I would recommend a trip there if you are in North Yorkshire

Had great tapas at Basco’s, and the next morning a wonderful breakfast at the Barco Lounge so even though the Bay Horse didn’t offer breakfast there is plenty of choice of excellent eateries within walking distance. Dog friendly too at the Barco Lounge, not sure about Bascos. Train station is only a 5 minute walk from the Bay Horse plus cheap car parking outside the pub. Selby is a lovely, lively little town.

Selby is an old Market town with market day on a Monday.
Selby is an old Market town with market day on a Monday. Parking is widely available and you get two hours for free in several places but longer stays are not easy to find in a central spot. Many of the shops are closing down or turning over really quickly and it has more than its share of charity shops. There’s several really nice (and reasonably priced) eateries as well as cafes and bakeries to suit all budgets. But selby is neither a place for shopping nor the hot spot for a good night out. The charm of Selby Abbey with its extensive history and interesting architecture are the most interesting and worthwhile aspect of this small town, but once you’ve done that, you’ve pretty much seen what the town has to offer. A two night stay is probably too much, unless you’re visiting with friends/family.

The Abbey was interesting. Walked along the canal and river.
The Abbey was interesting. Walked along the canal and river. One of our party was a railway enthusiast and enjoyed the station and the swing bridges. Selby is a convenient stepping off point for longer journeys. The local people were friendly and helpful.
Above all, the staff are lovely - welcoming, helpful, and if our dogs could write too, they'd probably ask why we didn't leave them there longer to enjoy the first hotel room we've ever stayed at which not only provides a dogs'-treats welcome pack and water-bowls in the room, but also a dogs'-treats breakfast too. Our breakfast was spot-on too, it's a pity the flooded A1(m) delayed our arrival beyond supper time, but the cask beer filled a gap. Amazing touches, we'd return even without the dogs.
We enjoyed the evening meal. The service was prompt, we all had a different meals and they were served together and all hot. We chose the hotel for it's location, to where we needed to be at the weekend. Bonus having a play area for the children. The bedroom was big enough for us as a family and beds were comfortable.
There was a problem with our bedroom door, we reported it to reception and it was promptly sorted
Check in was easy at the bar reception. The room was nicely decorated and was a good size as we had a separate small bedroom too. The beds were very comfortable, nice mattress and bedding. The water is hot for a shower. Tea and coffee in the room with a kettle. Lots of parking. Breakfast is good value for money. Nice surrounding area, good location. Easy drive to Selby and York.
This is a quirky place, part pub, part hotel and part Indian restaurant.
Rooms are great comfortable and warm.
The Indian food available is without doubt some of the best I have tasted. I stopped ordering after the first evening and let the lads choose. Not one bad meal brilliant food.
Staff behind the bar were lovely and friendly.
The rooms are modern and clean and very comfortable but the staff were 5 star, and the view if Selby abbey from the room was beautiful ❤️
The.location is ideal and as a first time visitor to Selby we were astounded by the local people's friendliness and desire to help in any situation
An absolutely beautiful little village
