Filippiada (Near Arta)
Located in Filippiada, 1.3 miles from Asprochalikos cave and 14 miles from Kokkinopilo, Agios Georgios Village has air-conditioned accommodations with a balcony and free WiFi. Kostas’ (the host) welcoming was geniounly warm and made me feel very welcome. I appreciated this even more as I had been “rejected” by another place in a nearby village that I had booked and payed on booking.com a day before my arrival (they did not want clients who had come from abroad and asked for a COVID certificate which is not required for travelers coming from Switzerland through Italy; I empathize and understand them from a human perspective, but from a professional and safety perspective I was appauled, because obviously, they operate their business without proper anti-COVID measures and they are trying to make up for that by applying their own amateur “screening process”; they apologised the next day, reimbursed me fully and offered to book elsewhere for me, but I had of course already booked at Agios Georgios village). Kostas’ place was immaculately clean (these days I do essential travel with DETTOL surface cleaners, KN95 masks and only stay in appartments off the beaten track), simething I appreciated very much. Kostas met me wearing a mask and keeping distances at all times. There is sanitizing gel available at the entrance. The appartments’ images on booking.com don’t pay justice to the property; everything is much, much nicer in real life. Amenities are basic, but it’s really all you need. The wi-fi was excellent and the big terrace had a great view over the mountains. The kitchen is spacy and the fridge big enough for a long term family stay. The location is great for a quiet, authentic Greek village/hospitality experience! I was tempted to extend my stay, as I am working remotely these days, but finally decided to return home. I would definitely go back again and this time I would stay longer.
Great in terms of what we wanted to see. Atra was a simply stop over on our road trip and therefore it was good to be able to see some interesting historical things as well, especially the bridge and an oak tree that was 1300 years old - amazing!!
Arta is a lovely town totally overlooked by tourists, from what I could tell. There are a few sites of interest - a beautiful old bridge, unusual old church and a fortress. Mainly it has a relaxed feel, with a long pedestrianised strip and shady cafes. Accomodation could be a problem; we had to stay out of town and drive in.
