Heracles is the warmest and most soft spoken person we met on the trip. We were warmly greated and made feel like guests at someone’s house. Also he kindly let us checkout later as we went for a hike in the morning and desperately needed a shower before getting on our way.

This was one of the coolest place I've ever stayed. Tucked up the hill of a little mountain village. A cozy room with wonderful mountain views. Responsive owner, decent wifi. I stayed here on whim. I passed through this town on the way to Kalamaki, and thought it would be magical village to experience, and spent two nights here on the way back. It was. And it was off season and not everything was open, but still ample tavernas and markets.

The hotel is situated in a small village amidst the mountains and allows you to experience the original Crete. The staff are very friendly and supportive of every request. The flat we rented was beautiful and comfortable, right by the small pool (the bigger one is in the main part of the hotel). I recommend the place because it has an interesting history and a real Greek atmosphere. The surrounding area is worth a visit and the beautiful beaches of southern Crete can be reached in about 30-40 minutes.

The view from the villa was breathtaking, the villa itself was very comfortable & well equipped - the bedrooms were all lovely & spacious, it was very clean throughout & there was a lot of space inside & outside - the top balcony was especially wonderful to have breakfast on & watch storms out at sea during our stay! Short walk into Kerames village to a well stocked mini-market & the excellent & very friendly taverna in the centre - amazing food & generous post-dinner raki! George was really helpful & quick to respond to any query we had.

The villa is up in the mountains so very peaceful. It's a very good size with 2 large bedrooms with a large lounge and kitchen area. There's a nice veranda looking out to a gorgeous view. There's a pool to dip into and 4 sun loungers. We arrived late and there was food / drink in the fridge that Nikos kindly provided. The villa was also nice and clean. Would highly recommend.

We stayed at the Elia in early May and were the only guests in the hotel, which meant the staff took really good care of us. Maria (young Maria - many of the local women are called Maria) made our visit to Crete. Maria was a brilliant host: really fun, interesting and very attentive. We ate breakfast and evening meals at the hotel. As it was early in the season the menu was slightly limited but the staff made up by preparing food they picked that day from the gardens and wild greens from the mountains. The food was excellent quality, fresh and plenty of it.... a refreshing change from the Chania tourist trap. The food and wine was also less than half the price of what they charged in Chania. The location for us was perfect: in the mountains 10 mins from Gerekari and also had a cracking walk to the Old Fort directly above the hotel. Meronas itself is beautiful and we spent a few hours just strolling around looking at the old houses and taking in the view. We also met the owner, Maria's great uncle who was an amazing gentleman and very knowledgeable about the local history. May is an excellent time to visit the mountains as the meadows are in full colour and the wildlife in abundance. Admittedly it is a little cool but this helped us with the walks in the mountains (we didn't even attempt a short stroll last August due to the heat). Tips: research the area first - the locals really appreciate when you show an interest. The Amari Valley is stunning and well worth driving around. The abandoned village of Gourgouthoi is worth a visit and a picnic up in the woods above the ruins (turn left just before the old church and follow the path jp into the wood. Also... ask the locals how to pronounce Gourgouthoi - only the older folk can pronounce it! Finally thank you Maria, you really are a fabulous person! Jim & Ashley!

Spílion is a beautiful little town full of charm and...

Spílion is a beautiful little town full of charm and character. The stone architecture, natural springs, and peaceful atmosphere make it a perfect place to relax and enjoy authentic Crete. The local people were friendly, the food was delicious, and the views of the surrounding mountains were stunning. A lovely stop if you're exploring the island!

Beautiful, quiet town with some church bells in the morning, so no need to put the alarm on your iphone to wake up for the sunrise :) calm, quiet, a couple of cool cafes and good food in the tavernas with the locals. Nice location to visit all parts of Crete.

Spili is an attractive linear village situated on the edge...

Spili is an attractive linear village situated on the edge of interesting mountains. It has a good assortment of stores and an excellent range of good cafes and traditional Tavernas. All the places that we visited were exceptionally friendly. It makes an ideal base for many excellent walks and car drives through very varied countryside. This countryside has a high proportion of fascinating flora and a good range of bird life.

Very nice small own halfway between Rethymno and the south...

Very nice small own halfway between Rethymno and the south coast of Crete. Some good tourist shops. Some decent cafes. There is a wonderful restaurant Taverna Pirgos right off the main road from Spili to Rethymno - about 6 km north from Spili. Well worth a visit
