Delicious food are everywhere but try 'Kedai makan Pak Datuak, Gulai Ikan Pauh Piaman & Pondok Flora to name a few. Shopping for ready made dresses and materials can be found along the road from Padang to Bukit Tinggi especially at 'Pandai Siket' and 'Soraya'. Have a pleasant trip.

You just cannot run out of good food options in the city!
You just cannot run out of good food options in the city! Try Itjap Satay and Lamun Ombak for a start. Also must visit Lubuk Paraku and try to jump off the rock to the super cold river water. If you are lucky, you'll be surrounded with a number of school-aged children playing around the river. They are excellent swimmer and have a very sweet gesture, encouraging you and all to try to jump!

The beach is a good spot for the family and the kids. Try to get away from the main city and visit the islands which are about two hours drive. Make sure you experience the fresh fish BBQ at the sea front.

In my opinion, Padang (+West Sumatra, incl. Bukittinggi, Pariaman, etc.) is one of the most beautiful area in Sumatra. The rivers, beaches, mountains are very beautiful; the sky is clear & blue; the city itself is very clean (especially when compared to most big cities in Indonesia); the people is very friendly; transportation is ok (very easy to get taxi or online transport in the city); food is really great (after Medan imho).

Stayed at Padang Mercure hotel nice clean hotel with great service and very clean with good food and restaurant. Nice pool and gym.
The properties around the hotel Mercure Padang were run down and the waterways were extremely dirty with rubbish, plastic and dirty water. Witnessed a man throwing paper plastic and rubbish into the waterways.
Did not feel safe walking around Padang as we were harassed by local youths. Driving in Padang best left to the locals as they have unique road rules that tourists may find difficult to negotiate.

You have to travel by car to reach other famous destination, such as Maninjau Lake, Pagaruyung Castle, Gadang clock, etc. It takes 3-4 hours driving.
Not much destinantion in Padang city itself, just the museum, the ocean, and culinary trip.
