Beautiful town.
Beautiful town. Traditional Japanese experience but still easy to get around if you’re from overseas. Matsumoto castle was a highlight - you can climb to the top of the tower - great views and really well signed explaining the history. We had a volunteer guide show us around the castle for free and he explained a lot of history about the area. Wonderful experience.AAnonymous - Scored 1010

In the city, the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum and the Matsumoto City Museum of Art are excellent. Renting a car from Toyota Car Rental for a drive to the Venus Line and the Utsukushigara Open Air Museum (sculpture park) was great.

Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night.
Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.Chow - Scored 1010

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.Anna - Scored 1010
