A lovely town, would have liked to go for some hikes in surrounding area...next time! It’s easy to get around by walking or take the bus. Tourist information at the station helpful English speaking staff. Our Ryokan stay was the highlight. The castle & town are pleasant & there are museums if you like.
Local people are so friendly. The city has a lot to offer. I definitely recommend those activities like Taiko Drum, samurai experience, apple farm. I'll stay longer to experience more next time. Bus connection to surrounding places like Kamikochi Norikura Highlands are good. But more direct buses would be great. Train is OK. But if one misses a bus, there will be problems. Also the frequency of the buses are to less. It is impossible to visit two places in a day e.g. combine the visit to Kamikochi and Norikura or Shirahone.
Friendly, very helpful staff. The twin bedroom was quite spacious: it had a seating area to watch TV as well as a desk with a chair. There were comfy beds and soft pillows. The bathroom had a full-sized western bath! It was an easy walk with our luggage from/to the station, as well as beyond to the area before the “black crow” castle that includes the clock museum, the traditional crafts’ street, the canal side market and the antique shops. No public transport needed to be used. We ate in an Italian restaurant and had a couple of beers in the Craft Beer Bar next to it; both less than 5mins from the hotel. We used the local train to go down to the juks of the Kiso Valley. We used the shinkansen for a fast trip to Tokyo.
Matsumoto is a vibrant city which owes its prosperity to a wonderfully preserved castle. Plenty of eating options and shopping districts too. The castle, however, was the most complete experience for an English speaker we have visited on our tour of Japan. All this with a beautiful mountain backdrop.
A interesting city with most places within walking distance, there are also 4 bus routes covered by a day pass for$500y. Another trip which can be done, which we did not do,is to the mountains which is only 30k away
There isn’t really too much to do in Matsumoto other then see the castle, it was quite a bit of effort to go here as the bullet train only goes past Nagano, so you have to get another train to and from Matsumoto to Nagano which took nearly 1 and a half hours each way on the Shinano Line ¥2640, which is roughly ¥1500 more than the Shinonoi Line which is just under 2hrs. We really did enjoy seeing this castle as it was in great condition and was still mostly the original castle.

This was our favourite hotel in our trip to Japan. From the moment we arrived to our departure all was done with a great attention to details. The most friendly welcome from a very friendly young Korean receptionist who went out of her way to explain the set up of the hotel and its facilities. Loved the Onsen, the traditional Japanese pyjamas and all the other details that made the hotel so nice. Matsumoto itself is a friendly city, easy to navigate. Lots of nice and cheap restaurants by the train station.

Staff spoke and understood English well. The ryokan is located away from the city and on high ground, giving a great view onto the city of Matsumoto and the mountains in the distance (if it's not cloudy). If you arrive with taxi, they will arrange for transportation to your nearest train station for free on your departure. It is quiet and peaceful. The food was delicious and beautifully arranged. The room was spacey.

We loved the ryokan experience. We loved the dinner and the breakfast as being an authentic Japanese experience. The onsen was great and it was a great introduction to the onsen experience. While the ryokan is not close to the centre the staff picked us up from the station and dropped us off at the castle. There are also good walking tracks close by.

Location great. Near station. Easy to walk into the city center, by traversing through the station. Hotel is at walking distance from the castle. We did this during an extremely hot week, together with our 2 teenager kids ... and we found this was (just) possible. So it should be easy to do under more normal conditions.

Two wonderful days spend here, enjoying true Japanese hospitality, while exploring beautiful Matsumoto by foot and bike. Thank you very much!

The hostel is an old traditional Japanese house with sliding doors, tatami mats and low tables for sitting on the floor. The staff are welcoming and the whole atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Right across the road from Matsumoto Castle and only 15 minutes walk from main train station.

This hotel is perfectly located: 2 min walk from the train station and yet it is very quiet. It’s also quite close to the castle. The room was clean and well equipped. Washing machine is cheap. The western-style breakfast is really good for that price.

This was my first stay at a Ryokan. In my opinion you get way more than you pay for, with free access to the baths, two meals a day (with the opportunity to get lunch too) and very friendly staff (keep in mind that I'm from Scandinavia - things are expensive up here). Our dinners were very exciting (albeit challenging for a western palate) and beautifully presented. Some dishes were better prepared than others, but overall of high quality. The hotel is of an older date, but still has a lot of charm, and I felt it was much better than what other reviewers have given it credit for - and I tend to be picky.
