The prix fixe dinners were wonderful, and clever. Who would expect such a talented chef to be on this little island . And each night the courses change.

My husband has to be on gluten-free diet and the chef did extra work to cook him delicious gluten-free dinner and breakfast. We really appreciated it. All the staff were very friendly and nice! We felt as if we were families. The owner was nice, too. I actually chose this hotel because my favorite writer, Fumiko Hayashi, stayed here back in 1940s and wrote the famous novel. They have the display of the writer's photos and stuff in the lobby. They keep goats in the front yard which is amusing.

Great location to get to UNESCO sites for hiking, beaches, and other points of interest. It was also only about 15-20 min from the airport. Our hotel room had a full glass wall that looked out onto the ocean, and the shower room also had a full glass wall that looked out onto the ocean. The buffet breakfast was also great.
On the day we left, our flight was delayed by a few hours, which then caused us to miss trains to get to our next destination. One of the receptionists went out of her way to help us notify the hotel and car rental company to let them know why we wouldn't be showing up on time and to hold our reservations. She helped us with the trains we needed to take and translated everything we would need to tell people into Japanese and wrote it down for us.

I accidentally booked a female dorm, and when I got there the manager said I couldn't stay. I know how it is with accommodations, they technically lose money if I book and want a refund. He let me stay in one of the reserved beds for emergencies. I had to pay again, but it was better than walking 6 hours at night back to town or sleeping in the wilds. Plus I had one of the best round table chats with all the guests!

The owner was so sweet and kind. She really made the stay special. We were able to buy freshly made bentos for our hike early in the morning and it was quite delicious, filling and cheap.

Staying right on the beach was lovely. The food was really good and while eating dinner you get to watch a beautiful sunset. Seeing the turtle tracks in the morning from the egg laying was really cute. Only 15 mins to Isso beach for some great snorkeling. I saw a loggerhead turtle there.

It is in a beautiful nature!!!
Stars were so beautiful!!!
I only come to climb the mountains. If you like surfing or all kinds of mountains/beachside activities. Should stay longer. The information center, MUST GO!!!! The local bus only has paper information, the digital/ internet information is not as easy to get as in cities.

Yakushima is incredibly beautiful, and because of its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are many more accommodations for foreign travellers than other areas of Japan (even on the mainland). The bus routes are very straightforward—especially if you have a single- or multi-day bus pass, but it is much easier to bring or rent a car and simply drive around the island.
I particularly enjoy visiting Shinto shrines, and there are a good handful of them on the island, but the main Yaku-jinja is really lovely and right next to the ocean south of Miyanoura port. If you have the chance, I also recommend taking a chopstick-making workshop, or visit the Yakusugi museum and do a hands-on demonstration there.
The only major problem is that the main transport to and from the island is by ferry, and if the seas are too rough, the ferries don't operate and you may be stranded for extra time (1 day for me).

Hard to put it in short but it was outstanding.
Hard to put it in short but it was outstanding. Arrive by fery from Kagoshima and took a flight back to Tokyo. 4 wonderful days full of hiking, nature, view, stunning waterfalls wildlife, forest with 2000 years old Cedars trees., beach, sand and more. We visited the island on Dec. It is off season so need to understand what this means. From one hand we were alone on all hiking, trails, outdoor onsen...just perfect. On the other hand, most coffee, restaurants are closed. You must make sure you either take hotel with meals or like use, a house we could cook in. And it was a big success.

Yakushima is a small Japanese Galapagos.
Yakushima is a small Japanese Galapagos. The 22km hike along the disused railway line to the cedar tree was incredible. Buy your bus tickets the day before at the information center outside the airport and get there early! We arrived at 4:45am to catch the bus and there was already a queue. Heaps of waterfalls to see and wildlife (deers and monkeys). The 15km one way drive along the west coast is amazing and nerve wrecking at the same time when another car approaches. Lots of reversing. Highly recommend but also note that it rains a lot which makes it a tropical paradise.

You really need to rent a car, and be sure to do so before your trip! Once I got there all the taxis were booked for the next few days and most every rental car was as well, I went to like 4 different places before finally finding a car. Totally changed my trip once I was driving around - I was nervous to drive on the left side for the first time (I'm American) but it was not bad at all! They go very slow there. Make sure you go to the ocean onsens on the south side of the island, that was one of my favorite parts! I went 4 nights which was enough to see almost everything I wanted, but I would've loved to spend more time there too. It was always my dream destination and I am so thankful to have gone, absolutely beautiful and totally different from the rest of Japan, or anywhere else I've ever been.

Lush, green, off the beaten track.
Lush, green, off the beaten track.
We loved the hiking, nature and kind people in Yakushima. Could have stayed longer than three nights to explore more trails.
Don't be afraid to eat a flying fish -- "wings" and all.
Renting a car makes it easier to get around, but we chose to stick with public transit, walking and taxi which was fine, if a bit limiting.

Excellent location right by the port. As the name suggests, it’s surrounded by mountains and the sea. The hotel exterior is not impressive, but the lobby and other common areas have been renovated and feels elegant and modern. We had a two room with mountain views. The room is very spacious but I’m afraid the rooms in the old wing are very dated, and some of the furniture is old. I expected better given the price. Breakfast is great with lots of choices.

This was a fantastic stay. The host is a very nice lady who made you feel like part of the family and really went out of her way to make sure that I had al the information for the walks and public transport in Yakushima. The bed was comfortable and there was a Japanese style bath in the accommodation. Overall this was excellent value and made my stay in Yakushima extremely enjoyable
