I recently stayed at Van der Valk Hotel Leeuwarden and was thoroughly impressed from start to finish. The hotel is modern, spacious, and immaculately maintained. My room was large, with a comfortable bed, stylish décor, and a spotless bathroom equipped with a rainfall shower. Small touches like the coffee machine, generous desk space, and quiet atmosphere made it perfect for both work and relaxation. The breakfast: unfortunately I didn’t have the chance to try the breakfast. Location-wise: the hotel is just outside the city center, making it easy to reach by car with free parking, yet only a short drive or bike ride into Leeuwarden’s charming old town. What stood out most was the staff: friendly, professional, and genuinely eager to make guests feel welcome. From check-in to check-out, everything felt effortless and well-organized.

Grou is a nice little town on the Friesland waterways.

Grou is a nice little town on the Friesland waterways. It is full of boats in the summer and has lots of cafes and restaurants. There are several supermarkets and shops plus numerous boat businesses and chandlers. A great centre for boating, walking and cycling. It can be busy in the summer so book ahead, especially during Skutjse week.

A well-organized small village with a great ice cream parlor...

A well-organized small village with a great ice cream parlor, restaurants, and boating opportunities. Jumo, Kruidvat, Lidl, and Action are on the outskirts of the village. Several attractions are a 1/2-hour drive from Leeuwarden, offering all the tourist attractions and cinemas. A relaxed environment.

What appealed to us was the friendly atmosphere in the village. There's no tourist fatigue. People still greet each other and have time for a chat. We also liked the location, with its many water features. Grou is also a great base for cycling, which we did frequently. It's peaceful at night. We just got back and are already thinking about our next visit.

Parking in Grou is a nightmare.

Parking in Grou is a nightmare. There's a jungle of signs that are simply impossible to understand. You definitely shouldn't go to Grou with a car that needs charging. There are almost no public charging stations, and if there is one, the parking spot isn't designated as one. So, charging is not possible in Grou (municipality of Leeuwarden).

Great city, great restaurants.

Great city, great restaurants. Despite the snowfall in March, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. A clean, small town with plenty of opportunities for walks along the water. The surrounding area is also worth exploring.

A beautiful place with a harbor and old houses; we spent over an hour walking around the center. We'll definitely stay in Grou again when there's an ice speedway race in Heerenveen. That was the reason for the trip, so I can't offer any further tips about Grou.

Lovely little village, few nice restaurants around the hotel, good village shop and bakery too. Stayed as an organised group, plenty of bedrooms to accommodate everyone. Has a ping pong table for children, nice bar (but closes a tad bit early than most at 11/12) breakfast is small selection of fruit, bread, croissants, baguettes then slices of ham/cheese/ boiled eggs/ granola is the cereal along with teas/coffee/apple and orange juice. Friendly staff.

Great reception by the host, very hospital. Bedroom Upstairs, seperate airy Bathroom (shower) and Toliet on the ground floor. For people who are not mobile enough, could deliver a challenge to get up the stairs, as for all historic buildings, steep. But no issues for us. Coffee in the room and Breakfast served, which we took outside in the garden, overlooking the canal, as the weather was good.

We had a wonderful weekend stay. The staff were very friendly, accommodating and professional, the room was beautiful with a great view over the water, and the food was plentiful and very delicious. Grou is a lovely little place with lots to do and great walks. The hotel is right on the habour. It has been beautifully renovated and has a very interesting history.

Really good location as can be seen on the photos. Room was a good size, very clean and quiet. Breakfast was amazing as was the staff. Close to other bars and restaurants. The dinner in the hotel was excellent. Would go again.
