Wellington is compact, walkable, scenic and has a buzz to it which is impressive given its small size. The waterfront area is definitely a highlight of the city. Te Papa is a big museum you can easily spend several hours in. Oriental Bay is nice to check out (if only walking/scooting/cycling). Te Aro and Cuba Street have plenty of cafes, bars and live music. It's a nice little city that's worth at least a couple of days of travel time if you're visiting NZ.
So much to see in a compact city. Our highlights included: Weta Workshop for movie buffs, Zeelandia for ecology and nature, Mt Victoria for walking and hiking (and mountain bike if that's your thing). Several good places to eat. Would highly recommend Yor Yak Thai near the Ramada, and we had a good fish and chips with a view at the Yacht Club. Just walking round and looking at the architecture (love Art Deco!) was fun, too. Check out the historical shipwreck hidden UNDER the Old Bank Building - we would have missed this if a friendly local hadn't mentioned it, and it is a must for history buffs. Also the Botanical Gardens is beautiful - catch the Cable Car to the top and walk down through the gardens (not the other way unless you like at lot of uphill walking.) There was plenty in Wellington to amuse us for 5 days. I'd like to return with a car, and explore more of the Greater Wellington region.
The walk up to Mt Victoria Lookout was worth the sometimes steep climb, the views were amazing. We caught the tram to the Botanical Gardens, there was not much colour in the gardens, but this could have been seasonal. The walk along the waterfront was very easy and great for people watching. It was a great place to visit for a couple of days.
WEllington has something for everyone. We enjoyed 4 nights and stayed right in the city which was a great move. We could walk everywhere. First night we watched the NZ ferns at the stadium, dined at Master kong on the waterfront, over the next few days we walked to oriental bay and went for a lovely swim, loved browsing the shops. Loved Te Papa. A walk up through bolten cemetry and the botanical gardens was gorgeous as was a trip up mt victoria. Can't wait to go back to Wellies.
Wellington has some great attractions such as Te papa, cable cars, zealandia and great shopping. We really enjoyed our stay! Mr Go’s is a must visit!!! The food is 20/10 and the atmosphere is vibing The downside is there are a lot of homeless people and people drinking in the streets. This was a bit intimidating.
I like the lack of traffic and the unpretentious nature of the city. We noticed the lack of restaurant staff- some places were only open part of the week and others were on holiday. I'd suggest people book ahead to avoid disappointment (January is understandably a poor choice for some of the desirable restaurants) We loved the ferry to Days Bay and the proximity of the bars once we returned. It's a very compact city. Zealandia was worth attending and also the Gallipoli exhibition at Te Papa. We struck some great weather which was a bonus .
Wellington
The hotel is in the best location in Wellington. It’s a good value for money. The room and the bathroom are clean, the beds are comfortable, and there is Wi-Fi everywhere in the hotel. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who’s looking for a place to stay that’s close to the center of Wellington and who doesn't want to spend a fortune. and there are some people book cheap hotel expect (five star service), I am not that guest, I love what I pay for and I appreciate it.
Very central location in wellington CBD - right next to Cuba St and Lambton Quay. Front of staff was very approachable and friendly. Wifi was available and of reasonable speed. Room was surprisingly quiet from the city noise on a busy Saturday night - probably because a bit away from Courtenay place. Although you can definitely hear everything that goes on outside the room in the corridor. Everything was quite clean and definitely met my standards.
Wellington
We stayed 29 Jan -01 Feb 2020. Apollo Lodge was right in the city of Wellington. Separate lodges at the rear of the Hotel, were really comfy and clean, nice shower and good kitchen facility. Walking distance to the many bars and eateries, perhaps 30-40 mins walk to Te Papa Museum (a must do) and the waterfront. Wellington is a fun and wacky place to visit. go on the Cable car up to catch the bus to ZEALANDIA (Beautiful Conservation centre)
Was quiet but did stay Sunday & Monday nights. Very comfortable bed. Nice clean room. Extra tea / coffee etc. items required no problem for staff to supply. Great location to central city shopping and food outlets. Grateful to Manager for compensating me with free breakfast for an issue which inconvenienced me which was NOT the Hotels fault plus a TV cable fault, much appreciated 👍
Wellington
We arrived in Wellington with the city being in alert level 3, so many services, banks, etc were closed. Athena was really thoughtful and considerate with us and helped us a lot to deal with problems we had due to level 3 restrictions. Regarding the hotel, it was great that the room included our own place to cook. The location was really good too, we were near almost every place
We were in Wellington to mountain bike and required safe storage for our bikes, the staff allowed us to take our bikes up to the room providing they were clean. This was amazing. It would be great if the hotel had a lock up storage cage or room available for storage of bikes as the popularity of biking in the city grows.
We love this old hotel, full of character. Creaky stairs and sheep portraits and all. Good pub restaurant, downstairs. So close to ferry terminal only 7 minutes drive, though you will need your GPS to navigate central Wellington's confusing roads. We stay here every year on our way South.
What a surprise. What a great hotel so convenient to the airport for a fraction of the price of one in the city centre. The hotel room was extremely comfortable, with everything we needed and only a cheap and convenient Uber to the city centre. Would definitely stay here again.
My family stay at the InterContinental every time they visit Wellington. The hotel is conveniently located in the city centre, the staff are always friendly and approachable, and the hotel room is tidy. I would highly recommend staying at the InterContinental Wellington.
Wellington
The hotel has a pleasant reading and relaxing area and this area is adjacent to the bar which closes at 9pm. There is free street parking after hours and the hotel is within walking distance to the core of the city and restaurants etc. It is an old-charm venue.
Wellington
Great location, warm and comfortable room, with great staff. Very handy to all that central Wellington offers. Room wasn’t facing into any of the city’s notorious winds so that was good too. Windows open a bit, so that was also a bonus.
Wellington
Amazing place to stay! Comfy rooms, clean & big bathrooms, great breakfasts and super friendly and helpful staff. The location is really handy to the main Wellington station and Parliament, as well as bus stops into the main city.
Wellington
I found the hotel to be very clean and beautifully furnished. It was in a quiet setting yet well connected to the city center. Nice, comfortable and modern place with convenient location. Responsive host. I would stay again.
A brand new hotel. Extremely clean. Great helpful staff. Really well-equipped room. Right by the cable car. Perfect central location. My new go-to place in Wellington and very reasonably priced. Loved it.
This hotel is in the perfect location for shopping and for access to central Wellington sights and sounds. Well appointed rooms. In Room laundry facilities were a bonus! Staff were extremely helpful
Wellington
I had my own food which I brought with me. As for the location of this Hotel very handy to the Wellington train station, also walking distance to the local shops in the city and water front.
Loved the central location and the character of the hotel and rooms. Will definitely back again when we are in Wellington.
