Suwalki as a town is not too interesting perhaps but around Suwalki there are places with great natural beauty such as Wigry etc. Also the Polish/Lithuanian food of the region is very tasty. Recommended for people who wants to have a rest.
Very nice town, good for shopping, nice places to be there and to relax, Wigry nationalpark is quiet near and it is necessary to go there. It is possible to use public transport to go there and away, nice place for familys with children in every age.
The city is very clean and you can find many different ambients where to eat, from local to italian and other kinds of cuisine international. The hotel was more than good for a good rest after a hard day.
Be sure not to visit during a national holiday when many shops, the archives, and museum are closed. We did not realize that the first week of May combines May Day (May 1) and Constitution Day (May 3) both national holidays.
We loved our time in Suwalki. We came to visit family. We enjoyed the beautiful old city center, the old market square, and the Museum of Suwalki. We had good food in interesting restaurants. We also enjoyed the beautiful Fall colors, in town and at Lake Wigry.
Suwalki is on the highway between Lithuania and Poland, and gets most visitors because of that. But the town deserves to be seen on its own merits. This part of Poland saw major action during WW2, and is of great interest to war buffs. Suwalki was badly damaged. It is today wedged in between Russia, Belarus, and Lithuania -- deep in the heart of Eastern Europe. On a personal note, my grandfather grew up in this part of Mother Poland. Note that both Poland and Lithuania belong to the EU and crossing the border here is easy! No visas!
