It’s a quiet country side to enjoy Mother Nature’s gift and the simple way of life. There are activities to keep you occupied and if you wish to just soak into the peaceful surrounding it is best place close by Chiang Mai city.
The Mae Rim area is a beautiful mountainous area located north of Chiang Mai. There is a lot to do in the area like waterfalls, botanic garden, ziplines, ATV trips, visits to elephant parks, but also a nice teak wood palace and tempel.
There are loads of activities and places to visit. Chiang Mai has lost it's charm due to traffic and expansion. Mai Rim is a 25 minute drive north of Chiang Mai and more quiet. Because it was the "burning season" there was a haze everywhere and so many people were wearing breathing masks which I hadn't seen before in Chiang Mai. If you stay in Mae Rim you need your own transport to get around.
Perhaps the word 'home' should have rung bells but it's not advertised as a homestay on booking.com. I was told on arrival by owner that there's no menu but when noticing my surprise was willing to cook me a meal. Main road is a whopping 2km walk. There is supposed to be a restaurant 200m away but owners son did not know where it was when they were out. The rooms were super clean but the bed had some hard thick wire running across it all the way down which was very uncomfortable. I don't normally write reviews and have travelled in Asia for 25 years. You don't always get what you want but there should be a limit to what's acceptable. Payed for 5 night left after 2. Good luck!
What a beautiful area, we loved exploring the villages near by in the mountains. The artwork these people do is so wonderful and they are very sweet. We loved staying at the Hmong Hilltribe Lodge. It was one of out best experiences in Thailand.
The elephant sanctuary nearby was a realy grat experience. Happy elephants, no painting, no soccer or carrying around bloody tourists. Very nice staff (Bobby). Temple on the mountain also beautiful!
