United StatesThis unique vacation rental has the charm of a Fijian homestay but the privacy and peacefulness of a rustic modern bure. The kitchen is well equipped for inside cooking and a grill and lovo pit were available to us for cooking outdoors. Our hosts Karl and Frances, retired from life and careers in the city, are the resident owners of this large family estate. Our hosts were readily available by phone or by flagging down Karl as he went about his daily chores of keeping track of the sheep, cattle and resident farm hands. We were provided with all the fresh coconuts and papayas we wanted for our entire stay! Our hosts picked us up and dropped us off at the airport and invited us to accompany them for shopping trips to Savusavu town. Karl grew up on this estate so was a great tour guide on these trips. Also, with a reloadable local bus fare card you can hop a bus running hourly up and down the Hibiscus Hwy most of the day. Empty taxis northbound back to Savusavu will give you a lift for the $3 FJD bus fare.
A highlight of our trip was diving at the Namena Island marine preserve with Koro Sun Dive based on nearby Savasi Island. Snorkeling is good on the reef out front (easiest at high tide) and kayaks are available for exploring the reef and shoreline. A large open lawn area fronts the estate shoreline with easy access to the water through passages in the mangroves or the adjacent sandy beach.
Good internet streaming with Starlink (bring a laptop or tablet), AC, full size fridge/freezer and good well water. There is also a water dispenser with chilled bottled purified drinking water. Options for washing clothes are either the laundry sink on the back porch (no washing machine) or the hosts can provide laundry and housekeeping services as needed. If you are looking for a peaceful rural holiday and especially if you like to prepare your own meals with fresh local ingredients, you will enjoy this Fijian vacation home!
