Por el Mundo Hostel

Downtown Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro

Conveniently situated in the centre of Rio de Janeiro, Por el Mundo Hostel provides air-conditioned rooms, a bar, free WiFi and a shared lounge. The property is around 1.8 km from Modern Art Museum, 2.7 km from Baía de Guanabara and 3.6 km from Museum of Tomorrow. The accommodation offers a 24-hour front desk, a shared kitchen and currency exchange for guests. The staff was the best part about staying at this hostel property, they took the time to explain in Spanish everything that was close by and show me on a map. They even made recommendations for the free museum days. I stayed extra days because I really liked the atmosphere of the hostel. At night the hostel staff invited the hostel guests out to eat and to see a nearby disco/club which was a very enjoyable experience. I arrived early at the hostel so the staff let me use a shower and change into shorts in an unoccupied bedroom, which was very much appreciated. The bathrooms and kitchen were always clean and I saw them being cleaned regularly. I found the beds although not very spacious they were very comfortable for sleeping. There was air condition in the dormitory during sleeping hours. The keycard to get into the hostel was very convenient and with the situation outside the hostel, I felt safer knowing that I could just tap my card to get inside... without having to wait for someone to answer the door. I like the common areas of the hostel they have a very good atmosphere. There is a power bar with a North American power socket in the main common area to charge your devices if you're not from Brazil. The hostel accepts credit card as payment and does not charge extra. There is a shared bicycle system nearby... if you go to the website you can sign up with a foreign credit card and use the bicycles. You can sign up for a bicycle rental plan and take the bicycles for an hour at a time each trip, bring back the bicycle before an 1 hour to avoid being charged over usage fees and after 15 minutes you can take another bicycle without being charged extra. The nearby metro system also accepts credit cards for payment if you buy one of the metro cards. Unfortunately, the train and bus accept cash only.

Galeao International Airport is 14 km away. View from our deck outstanding. Breakfast of fresh fruit, toast, coffee, cake, eggs, was delightful. Late arrival had English speaking staff on site to welcome us. We cannot give enough accolades to Tom. The most helpful of ANY staff member we have had the pleasure to meet in our 7 months of world travel. Above and beyond his duty description. Rio would not have been the same without his informative input and patient personality. Thank you friend.

Apart from that the location was great, in a rather safe and authentic area of Botafogo with acces to the metro at your finger tip. Last but not least, I have to mention that the wonderful staff made me feel like home. Fernanda, the owner of this unique place, is so welcoming and friendly. She is a very special individual, having a lot of stories to share with travellers. In short, I would surely stay again in this fantastic hostel. Thanks a million to Fernanda and the outstanding crew on board!!!

Hostels – what are they?

Hostels offer so much more than a cheap place to stay – they're also a fun way to travel and meet like-minded people. Common areas like shared kitchens and game rooms give you the chance to swap tips, tricks, and travel stories with backpackers from all over the world.

Hostels have come a long way since the first youth hostel opened back in 1912. Nowadays there's something for everyone, from budget "crash pads" to 5-star "poshtels." Whether you'd prefer a bed in a shared dorm or your own private room, you'll see that most hostels are cheaper than local hotels – and a lot more fun, too!
