Everything was amazing! Such personalized service, fun tours, the property is so nice to relax in, and the food was excellent. It's off the beaten path and not a party hostel, but it is social. The owners are very kind and warm and spend time with all the guests. I loved the little sweet dog Mena.

Amazing staff, they go above and beyond to make sure you have a great stay. They are all polite and hard workers, food is also great. Location in the middle of the forest is a plus and the huts style lodge make you feel lost in nature, although is very comfortable. Facilities are great, with a stunning pool and a restaurant/chill out/games area to hang out with others. Visiting Semuc Champey was incredible. They organize tours to take you there but also shuttle to other cities in Guatemala so they have you covered!

Beautiful place! It's right on the river, surrounded by nature, and has a pool as well. There are tons of hammocks and birds (which are noisy in the mornings), and the restaurant has a lot of options and overlooks the river. This is one of the few hostels I came across that has female-only dorms, which is why I chose it. The room was large, there was air conditioning and warm water, and the beds are comfortable. El Retiro offers fantastic tours to Semuc Champey (it included a lot of activities as well as lunch if you want, I had a great guide who made sure we were comfortable, and luckily my group was small that day) and you can book shuttles with them as well. I did the cocoa tour through them too, which was interesting, but the Semuc Champey tour and hanging out at this beautiful vacation hostel were the highlights of my stay.

The setting is beautiful with abundant wildlife and a waterfall right in front of the property. The communal area brings people together and fosters relationships. The local lunch tour was a beautiful hike and well worth the 70Q cost. Transportation in and out of the hostel was well organized. There is no roads nearby so no noisy traffic. The half hour hike in serves as a filter to only bring in a certain type of backpacker.
