Born of an ancient civilisation, Cairo is a vast metropolis centred around the Nile. Its sheer scale can feel overwhelming (especially when flying over it into Cairo Airport), so plan ahead. An obvious starting point are the Giza Pyramids. Although the pharaohs are long gone, the grandeur of their burial pyramids, the Sphinx and Solar Boat are testament to their ambition.
The city’s Egyptian Museum houses a dazzling display of ancient Egyptian artefacts, including finds from Tutankhamun’s tomb in Luxor. Around the corner is Tahrir, a huge square and focal point of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.
East is Islamic Cairo, home to 9th-century Ibn Tulun Mosque, Al-Azhar Mosque (site of the world’s oldest university), and the Khan el-Khalili souk – remember to haggle. The Citadel, with its elegant Mohammed Ali Pasha Mosque, sits on a hill offering far-reaching city views.
If you want to step out of cultural tours, take a Nile cruise by felucca, spot wildlife in Wadi Digla desert park or visit Egypt’s top theme parks: Dream Park and Magic Land, where you can tour Egyptian TV studios.
Before heading to your Cairo accommodation, sample the local cuisine – the falafel and fuul (bean paste) are delicious. Turkish coffee is a staple and there are hundreds of shisha bars, while major Cairo hotels have bars serving alcohol.

I stayed two days and you don't need any longer to walk through the city centre, visit the mosques and go to the pyramids and egyptian museum. The pyramids are impressive but the rest of it is not worth it given the awful treatment from the people here and the abuse to horses and camels in the area. I ended up spending more than double the money I had budgeted because of hidden costs and lack of transparency with prices and what is actually included with each entry ticket.
It's the first time I firmly believe I don't want to return to a city I've visited. They don't respect their own inheritance and the security staff of all attractions are there to encourage you to skip the rules so that you slide them a bit of cash. They'd even let you get inside the pharaonic sarcophagus for a fiver if they think nobody else is looking (I've seen it). Also there's so many people harassing you in the street just because you're a tourist. It's sad to see how people are so driven to squeeze all the money out of you. And they're unashamed about it. No intention to make you feel at home.

A beautiful history and culture, but you really need a guide and driver to go anywhere, be it the crazy traffic or just understanding what's being said to you, you can't get around without the combination of both.
Depending on your interests, you can spend about 3-4 days in the actual city center, a day trip to Alexandria being about a 3,5 hour drive two ways is also an option for another day here.
If you want to really experience the local culture you need a good guide to take you under their wings, if they show you around you will generally be able to see and experience live in the city as it is.
Going out into the street alone you will be harassed by locals nonstop, going out alone is not recommended.
For those interested in a cruise on the Nile, you have the dinner cruise that's entirely for tourists, which is interesting but a total cash grab. I much more recommend you take a sailboat on the river, they are many times calmer and also not as scammy.

It is a bit of a messy place when it comes to transport. We loved downtown area and in general people is really nice. Best option is to get a good guide who can take you everywherew and takes away the hussle of being aware of everything.

Messy and hectic but if you find the right place to go, it is amazing to discover. Don't go to touristic place. Try to do research on places to visit online instead of going to the easiest touristy place, and you will feel less scammed and less people asking you for money.. Uber works so well here too not like in Hurghada.

The people that live there are so kind and welcoming.
The people that live there are so kind and welcoming. The city itself is so noisy and dirty. Most of the city looks like a war zone. The sales people can be completely rude and overwhelming. That being said, the historical side of things is unmatched in the world. The food, fruits and vegetables are amazing. After a week or so, you start to get the rhythm of the city and it sort of grows on you. Craziest drivers I've ever seen, but they somehow survive. It's a place you have to see at least once in your life.

Depends on where you are from, Cairo could be a whole another universe, as it was with me. After the innitial shock subsides, you start enjoying it. Quite dirty city, it smells bad most of the time. Driving in Cairo is like a survival but they somehow manage to drive "safe".
I chose Radisson because it's so close to the airport (I arrived late and didn't want to drive on at night). The interior design (lobby with "open" patio, rooms etc.) was very attractive and fully correspond with the 4-5 star rating of the hotel. The selection of dishes for breakfast was also very good (except for the missing orange juice).
Upon check out with the quality manager (by chance), she was really interested in learning what they could do to improve in my rating (I said I would give an 8 of 10).
I chose KMT Hostel since I needed a cheap place to sleep for one night in Cairo. It's well located - I walked there from the bus station. There are restaurants nearby and the metro is close.
My bunk bed was comfortable and roomy, though I suspect the room gets crowded when all the beds are taken. The bunk has a personal plug, light and a shelf. Bathroom was clean with good showers.
I left early, so didn't try the breakfast. The hotel owner was my taxi driver to the airport, very easy.
The staff is really friendly and helped us a lot with everything we needed. The place is very near to the pyramids, just 5 minutes walking until the pyramids entrance. There are a lot of restaurants, markets very near and you have good options. The hotel offers differents tour so I really recommend to ask them for the tours because they have really good and cheap deals. The roof top is amazing and you can see the pyramids
location is very good close to airport and big shopping malls in Cairo

Location is very accessible, staff are friendly, price is reasonable, very near to Egyptian museum and souvenir shops, just beside KFC and some restaurants. There is also money changer nearby.
Breakfast is good 👍
The tours in the hotel are cheaper than online booking.
There is heater in the shower and my room is quiet at night.
I will come back to this hotel if I am visiting Egypt again. 👍

Location is good as well, very close to pyramids, shops and what i like the most is that the neighborhood is local, not very touristic area. For sure make you feel close to the egyptean culture.
Totally recommend this hotel.
The location is really great, right on the Nile river, the staff were really great and always helpful. The rooms are spacious, clean and equipped with water everyday, the breakfast is really good, large variety and tasty! The hotel itself is beautiful and has so much to offer, restaurants, casino, some shopping, really nice for a stay in Cairo
