Company info

The Poppy House is run by Lynn, her daughter Claire, her brother Clive and his wife Julie. We moved to Bishop's Castle from the Black Country in July 2009 with mother and daughter in tow. This has made it a real family concern. Our previous careers involving Care Home Management, tourism, lecturing and administration have helped us create a strong family team with our number one priority being customer satisfaction.

Property info

ituated within the town of Bishop's Castle in the heart of the beautiful Shropshire hills is this grade II listed building known as The Poppy House. The Poppy House is a large rambling house. Parts of this fascinating property date back to the 11th Century with some historians believing it contains one of the old entrance towers to the original Bishop's castle. It has been suggested that the vaulted cellar was the cart entrance to the outer bailey from the town's market leading to a courtyard from where the name Market Square originated. This area would once have been the centre of commerce for the old town allowing merchants & craftsmen to trade in safety, close to the castle walls. The longest stretch of the wall remains intact in our garden where the original buttresses can be clearly seen together with the remnants of an old forge. Pieces of engraved stone have recently been found in the raised garden suggesting that this is the site of the castle's chapel. The remainder of the property has been added to over the centuries, mostly between the 16th and 18th. Timber frame walls and ceilings with oak floors throughout. We are a 4-star B&B accredited by Visit Wales. Please note from 1 January 2024 we will be operating on a room only basis. Breakfasts can be purchased at an additional cost at our on-site cafe, Thursday to Sunday from 9.00am.

Neighborhood info

Bishop's Castle is a small market town set in the beautiful Shropshire Hills midway between Shrewsbury and Ludlow. It is also home to two breweries including the oldest licensed brewery in Britain, the Three Tuns. It is an excellent base for good walking and cycling areas such as the Long Mynd and Kerry Ridgeway.
