Tir Nan Oag has been extensively refurbished in 2020! All rooms have been redecorated and upgraded with some new furnishings. The house now has a relaxing Scandinavian/Alaskan theme. Our home is beautifully situated with superb views from 3 rooms to the North Atlantic Ocean, and Kirtomy is over a mile from the main A836 and hence is quiet, tranquil and peaceful. There are many interesting hikes and walks to be had, and the area is full of interesting, unique and rafre wildlife. Lovely Kirtomy Bay, with its jetty and rockpools, is just 10 minutes walk from the house. There is no locallight pollution at night, and the whole area has outstanding natural beauty. You'll love your stay here!
We are keen amateur astronomers, and on a clear dark night, we'd be very happy to give you a guided tour of the night sky through our two astronomical telescopes. We also run after school technology clubs and if you have children, we can guarantee to enthuse them with our fun electronic wizardry! We're non intrusive but very friendly and living in the nearby croft cottage, are available most of the time to offer help and advice.
If you love nature as we do, you'll love your stay in Kirtomy; there is so much rare and interesting wildlife here - Deer, birds of prey, puffins, amphibians and reptiles; the whole area is unspoilt and alive with a plethora of natural beauty and fauna. There are superb local walks to be had - up to Kirtomy mast where there's a 360 degree panoramic of the highlands and the sea towards Orkney and the Faroe islands. You can take a 30 minute drive across the Causeway at Tongue and go and visit the famous Smoo Cave. Puffins can be seen from time to time at the goregous River Naver estuary at Bettyhill just 4 miles away. Boat Fishing trips can be booked from Harper's fishing tackle shop in Thurso, Excellent cuisine is provided at the Bettyhill Hotel and at the world-renowned Cote Du Nord Bijou Restaurant in Kirtomy, and you need to book in advance. Food and groceries are available 6 days a week at Bettyhill General Store, and there is a Gym and swimming pool at the North Coast Leisure Centre.Getting bored here is neither a likelihood nor an option!
