House of Shells
Can you count the shells? This 16th-century palace is covered in the things. It was built by Don Rodrigo Arias de Maldonado, a knight of the Order of Santiago de Compostela. The symbol of this order is the seashell, and he decided that it’d be rather splendid to have them all over his palace. The result is the magnificent Casa de Conchas, a seashell-studded marvel.
In the Albaicín, whitewashed alleyways are lined with old-fashioned eateries, winding upwards to viewpoints with breathtaking vistas of the Alhambra Palace. Granada’s most traditional neighbourhood is a tapas-lover’s treasure-trove – try Calle Elvira for a spot of bar-hopping, or head to the terraces around Mirador San Nicolás, where diners drink in stunning views of the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas.
