Spinalonga — island near Elounda, Crete.

Spinalonga — island near Elounda, Crete. Historically interesting (Venetian fortress, Ottoman rule, leper colony until 1957), now a tourist spot. Boat trip for 2: €24, entrance: €40 — total €64. Consider it support for the local economy. We didn’t find the island worth visiting — it would have been enough to see it from afar. The boat ride was nice, but overall, the trip is overpriced. I wouldn’t do it again.

It was a great place to go by boat to see but there isn’t any guide to help understand the history or what exactly the buildings/rooms were. Some signage but only have an hour so you can’t see it all in that time. We hustled around the place not really reading much so we could see more but still missed a lot. Recommend reading about the history before visiting for it to be a better experience ana understanding.

Absolutely disappointing.

Absolutely disappointing. A beautiful island from afar, but left to destruction. Thousands visit the island every month, but the money earned with it goes not to the upkeep of the island. It has tremendous potential as a destination, for a good museum, restaurants, even performances at night. As it is now, it is falling apart.

Little changed from our last visit 26 years ago. Same family running it. A basic hotel that has all the essentials, including decent air-con, and the best view in town if you get a sea-front room. Bathroom small, shower adequate, generally clean and tidy. Very central location and the attached Kalidon restaurant floats in the harbour next to the Spinalonga boats - excellent food and very friendly staff.

Location is amazing - very idyllic and close to day trips like Spinalonga Island. Room was a great size and very nice bathroom. For a hotel buffet, the selection was reasonable and changed enough each day for it not to be boring (we stayed for 3 nights).

The view of the sea from the balcony is wonderful. It is a moving canvas of the coast across to Spinalonga. The apartment is also well placed with two excellent restaurants literally a few steps away but with no disturbance to the occupants of the apartment. We look forward to returning soon.

The Island Apartment is clean, tidy and spacious. Full stock of kitchen appliances and utensils. Perfect location for the town centre with multiple bars, restaurants and supermarkets and close enough for a nice stroll to the local beaches. The outstanding feature is the view across the bay to Spinalonga from the spacious balcony. Ilianna, the owner is always available should you need anything and takes a pride in keeping her guests happy. She is amazing. This is our second stay at the Island Apartment and it will not be our last.

The room was good, very clean, with a fridge, a kettle and a hair dryer, the room had a balcony with a table and chairs, there was a TV, we didn't switch it on, the wifi had great coverage throughout the hotel. Seating in all areas was great, around the pool, in reception and in the restaurant, bar prices where also very reasonable. It's a short easy walk into town, and well placed for a trip to Spinalonga.

The apartment was overlooking Elounda Port with a wonderful panoramic view of the bay and Spinalonga Island. It is really beautiful. Elounda itself is OK, with some nice restaurants, but it wasn’t our sort of resort and we cut short our stay. Fortunately, it is just fifteen minutes drive from Agios Nikolaos, which has lots more to offer.
